Brisbane Broncos boss being eyed for Supercars CEO role

There are reports Brisbane chief executive Dave Donaghy has been approached as a potential replacement for former Supercars CEO James Warburton who announced his shock resignation from the motorsport giants last month.

According to The Courier Mail Supercars has appointed a recruitment firm to lead the search for a new CEO, with several high-profile names on their wish list—including Donaghy.

Previously at the Melbourne Storm where he became the youngest CEO in NRL history at just 32, Donaghy joined the Broncos at the start of the 2021 NRL season, just months after the NRL’s biggest club finished a disastrous last in 2020.

After Brisbane fell narrowly to the Panthers in the 2023 Grand Final, the 43-year-old then oversaw the controversial removal of Kevin Walters as head coach at the end of the 2024 season and subsequent appointment of Michael Maguire.

Not without some irony, the man Donaghy could replace at Supercars—James Warburton—is one of several high-profile candidates also linked to the NRL CEO role that will be vacated by Andrew Abdo in July.

While losing a sports administrator of Donaghy’s experience and calibre would be far from ideal, Broncos fans shouldn’t be too concerned—for now anyway.

While things can change fast and a deal is yet to be done, Racing Australia Consolidated Enterprises (RACE) chairman and interim CEO Barclay Nettlefold is currently considered the favourite to continue in the Supercars CEO role.
