If the Saints really see senior assistant Corey Enright as Ross Lyon’s successor, now might be the time to give him the top job.

Enright was seriously considered for the Carlton job, but missed out to interim Josh Fraser, and this week 7News’ Mitch Cleary reported that Lyon’s potential long-term successor may leave the club.  

Enright is out of contract at the Saints, and has most recently met with Collingwood, who are looking to recruit people into their football department under senior coach, Craig McRae.

Ross Lyon currently holds the Saints’ top job, after previously being employed with the club from 2007-11.  

However, has the second Ross Lyon era actually for St Kilda? 

The answer so far, is no.  

The Saints have played in just one final in Lyon’s second stanza, a heavy loss to GWS in an Elimination Final. 

They have now missed out on finals three years running, despite the AFL increasing number of teams from eight to 10 in what Lyon dubbed as a «low-bar» following his sides’ defeat to Gold Coast in round 24.

Lyon has been criticised for being too defensive at times, and with the club investing heavily last trade period for no results, would the grass be greener at Moorabbin with someone else calling the shots?

While there is no guarantee Enright would be the magic fix, there is equally no guarantee that Lyon produces better than he did.  

Is another year of Lyon worth the risk of losing Enright? 

The six-time All-Australian spend his playing career in a winning environment in Geelong, and comes from a winning culture, more than most can say at the Saints. 

On top of this, he is already familiar with the St Kilda system, and is clearly respected in the AFL landscape, having been looked at for senior jobs.  

Lyon’s future is tied to the Saints until the end of next year, but if all the succession chatter is true, surely the Saints can’t let the man they see as their future leave the club.
