With Red Bull’s Max Verstappen now locked into a long-term deal until 2030, Oscar Piastri’s move to the team is appears to be off the table.

Verstappen’s future at Red Bull, or even F1 in general, had been a genuine talking point throughout the season, particularly after the four-time world champion repeatedly voiced his frustration with F1’s new regulations.  

Before the Canadian Grand Prix, Sky Sports reported that Piastri was «flattered» to be Red Bull’s number target should Verstappen had made a different decision. 

But with Verstappen now committed to Red Bull, that potential pathway has disappeared.

For Piastri, the Dutchman’s re-signing means he most likely stays at McLaren, at least for the short term.   

The 25-year-old is tied to the Woking outfit until 2028, while teammate Lando Norris also has a long-term deal. 

With most of the competitive seats already accounted for in 2027, Piastri’s options for a move are limited.

Two seats officially remain available at Mercedes, according to racingnews365, though it hard to see either George Russell or Kimi Antonelli walking away from the Silver Arrows. 

Red Bull will almost certainly retain Isack Hadjar, and Ferrari have Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton committed for 2027. 

While it appears that Oscar Piastri is settled at Woking, there are still rumours linking the Australian to Maranello.   

Those rumours intensified after the 2025 season, when Piastri led Norris by 102 points midway through the championship before ultimately losing the title to his McLaren teammate.

Verstappen’s decision closed the most obvious door for Piastri.

However, if the young Australian decides its time leave, will the prestige of Ferrari be too much to turn down in the future?
