Detectives in Thakurgaon say the suspect, 30-year-old Khorshed Ali, was taken into custody on the night of August 6 after officers acted on intelligence pointing to illegal gambling activity in Maligaon village, within Jamalpur Union of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.

A preliminary forensic review of the seized device became the focus of the investigation. Police reported finding 38 online casino-related applications registered in the suspect’s name, with investigators alleging they were used to manage gambling accounts across multiple websites, mobile apps and digital platforms.

Investigators Link Apps to Wider Gambling Network

Authorities believe the operation extended well beyond personal gambling. Detectives allege the suspect actively brought local residents, including young people, onto online betting platforms, helping expand participation in illegal gambling.

The investigation also points to substantial financial losses among users connected to the network, although police have not disclosed how much money may have been involved or how many people were affected.

The allegations remain subject to the ongoing criminal case.

Community Reports Financial Damage

The case has drawn attention because of the broader impact local residents describe. People in the area told investigators that online gambling has left some households struggling with debt, while others reportedly experienced devastating financial consequences. Residents also linked the spread of illegal betting to cases of suicide following severe economic hardship, although police have not provided independent figures confirming those claims.

Detective Branch officials compared the social risks posed by online gambling to those associated with narcotics and indicated that enforcement efforts against digital betting operations will continue.

A case has been registered against Khorshed Ali under Bangladesh’s Cyber Security Act at Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station. Following his arrest, a court ordered that he be sent to jail while legal proceedings move forward.
