Leota’s manager Gavin Orr confirmed Brisbane was among the clubs that had made enquiries as they gauge the experienced front-rower’s future.

«We have reported back to Penrith and said we have this level of interest, these are the clubs who will target him come November 1,» Orr said.

«The Broncos were one of the clubs we spoke to, but I don’t know what their salary cap situation is.» Orr explained.

Despite the interest from rival clubs, Leota’s preference remains to finish his career at Penrith if a new deal can be reached, but the Panthers may not be one of the clubs who can meet his asking price.

The 30-year-old is reportedly seeking a three-year extension worth around $2.5 million as he looks to secure the final major contract of his career, and whilst it is a number that could be a fair price based on his resume, the reality is the Panthers have several priorities and Leota is entering the final years of his career.

Penrith has already indicated Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo remain the club’s retention priorities, and the combination of salary cap constraints and Leota’s asking price could open the door for the Broncos to get another forward capable of filling the immense void the departure of Payne Haas will leave.

Brisbane’s interest is a fascinating development after the Broncos crashed out of finals contention this season despite entering 2026 as the defending premiers, and clearly they will need to restock to get back into the finals in 2027.

The Broncos have already strengthened their roster with the addition of Mitch Barnett and Jonah Pezet as key recruitment pieces, but the interest in Leota suggests the club is continuing to explore every opportunity to add proven premiership experience to its squad.

Whether Leota ultimately remains at Penrith or tests the open market later this year remains to be seen, but Brisbane has now officially emerged as one of the clubs keeping a close eye on his future.
