McEwen will miss the Knights next clash against the St George Illawarra Dragons after the club completed an internal disciplinary process into the incident, which occurred on May 22.

The Knights confirmed the second-rower was charged by NSW Police for driving with a low-range drink driving offence.

The 21-year-old has also been handed a $5000 suspended fine, which will remain in place for the next 12 months provided he does not breach the NRL code of conduct again.

McEwen, who has emerged as one of Newcastle’s breakout performers since debuting last season, said he was “deeply ashamed” of his actions.

“There is no justification for what I did. Getting behind the wheel with alcohol in my system was irresponsible, dangerous, and completely beneath the standards I hold myself to as a person and as a professional footballer,” McEwen said in a club statement.

“I am fully aware of the trust the Newcastle Knights have placed in me, and I let the club, my teammates, and everyone who supports this team down. The NRL is a privilege, and I do not take lightly the responsibility that comes with it.” McEwen continued.

The tough second-rower also issued a further apology, taking full responsibility for what is the first major blemish of his young career.

Knights director of football Chris James said the club had taken the matter seriously while continuing to support the young forward.

The NRL’s integrity unit has remained informed throughout the process and is not expected to hand down any further sanction over the incident.

James also spoke highly of McEwen’s character while reiterating the standards the club expects players to uphold during what has been a refreshing season for Newcastle.

Despite many writing the club off during the pre-season, the Knights currently sit seventh on the NRL ladder and are shaping as genuine finals contenders off the back of several standout performers.

McEwen has been a key part of that resurgence, with he and Dylan Lucas providing Newcastle with damaging edge threats on both sides of the ruck.

The Knights expect the young forward to learn from the incident and continue his development, and based on his rapid rise this season they will back him to do exactly that.
