Cowboys player make bold promise Jerry Jones can’t ignore heading into new season

Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys witnessed last season falling short of expectations by missing the playoffs. The team is now focused on restoring its reputation as one of the NFL’s elite teams, and tight end Jake Ferguson already believes the offense is positioned to take a major step forward this season.

Speaking to reporters during the team’s voluntary offseason workouts, Ferguson said that the Cowboys’ offense still has another level it can reach

«Yeah, last year, that’s the starting point for us,” Ferguson said. “I think we barely scratched the surface of who we could be. And we look back at a lot of tape right now, and we say, ‘Hey, there is a lot we can clean up, and we’re looking forward to it.’»

Ferguson is coming off the most productive season of his NFL career. The Cowboys tight end hauled in a career-best 82 receptions last year, which tied for the fourth-most catches among all NFL tight ends. The reception total was impressive, but the production did not always translate into explosive gains downfield.

Ferguson’s yards per catch dipped compared to previous seasons, and the Cowboys would likely benefit from seeing him return closer to his earlier efficiency levels.

Before last season, he averaged 9.5 yards per reception in his career, while his overall career average currently sits at 8.8 yards per catch. Those numbers prove that there is still room for even greater offensive production if the Cowboys can generate more chunk plays involving their reliable tight end.

Meanwhile, Ferguson also expressed confidence in the overall depth and talent of the Cowboys’ tight end room.

«Yeah, it feels like I say this every year, but this is the best talent I’ve seen in this room,» Ferguson said.

Ferguson is already one of the more productive tight ends in franchise history, as he has totaled 231 career receptions with Dallas, placing him fifth all-time among Cowboys tight ends. If he continues his current pace, he has a strong chance to move past both Billy Joe DuPree and Doug Cosbie on the franchise’s all-time receptions list during the upcoming season.
