Dominic Young has ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a new long-term deal with the Newcastle Knights that will keep the star winger at the club until the end of 2030.

Newcastle officially confirmed the agreement after reports earlier this week indicated the two parties were closing in on a deal, securing Young as an important part of the club’s long-term plans.

The agreement comes after negotiations did not initially run smoothly, with Young reportedly rejecting Newcastle’s first offer after believing the club had undervalued him.

Those differences have now been overcome, with the 25-year-old committing his prime years to the Knights after successfully rebuilding his career in Newcastle following his return from the Sydney Roosters midway through last season.

Young originally joined Newcastle in 2021 after making his Super League debut as a teenager and developed into one of the NRL’s most dangerous finishers before leaving for the Roosters at the end of 2023.

His time in Sydney lasted less than two seasons before a mid-year move brought him back to the Knights, where he quickly rediscovered the form that made him such a valuable part of the club during his first stint.

Young’s return has provided Newcastle with far more than his ability to finish tries, with his size and powerful carries also making him an important part of the Knights’ work coming out of their own end.

His new deal continues an important period of retention for Newcastle, with Dylan Lucas, Jermaine McEwen and highly rated youngster Francis Manuleleua among the players to have also committed their futures to the club.

Securing Young provides another important piece of stability as the Knights look to build around a core group capable of keeping the club in finals contention over the coming seasons.

The announcement also arrives as Newcastle prepares for its return to finals football just a year after collecting the wooden spoon, completing a remarkable turnaround in Justin Holbrook’s first season in charge.

Young will be available for the opening week of the finals after serving a one-match suspension for the hip-drop tackle on Manly’s Tolutau Koula.

After a bumper season headlined by key player retentions and a return to the finals, Knights fans have plenty of reason to be excited about both this year and beyond.
