The Cleveland Cavaliers spent weeks waiting on LeBron James. Instead of a hometown homecoming, they watched the 41-year-old sign a two-year, $8 million contract with the rival Philadelphia 76ers, leaving Cleveland to pivot to Plan B. The rejection follows a disappointing postseason conclusion, where the New York Knicks swept the Cavaliers in four games during the Eastern Conference Finals.

Still, Cleveland is not building from scratch. This past season marked the first time the franchise reached the conference finals without James on the roster since 1992. Donovan Mitchell anchored that run, averaging 26.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists across 18 playoff games.

However, Mitchell’s individual production was not enough to overcome the Knicks, and running back the same core in a deeper Eastern Conference is a roster risk. That pressure explains why the front office should explore a high-profile trade for superstar Kevin Durant.

According to The Ringer’s Michael Pina, Cleveland is one of several teams with varying degrees of interest in the Rockets forward if he ends up available this offseason.

Moreover, Sports Illustrated’s Nick Pedone wrote, «Durant is probably the last one remaining this offseason now that LeBron is in Philadelphia with Jaylen Brown and the Toronto Raptors will eventually finalize their blockbuster deal for Kawhi Leonard.»

The Cavaliers possess the contract assets to participate in these discussions. A workable framework involves Cleveland sending out James Harden on a projected three-year, $113.8 million sign-and-trade deal, alongside Max Strus and a 2031 first-round draft pick.

In return, Cleveland would absorb Durant’s $43.9 million salary cap hit for the upcoming season while adding frontcourt depth with center Clint Capela.

For Houston, trading Kevin Durant for James Harden brings back an all-time franchise icon who remains a reliable 20-point playmaker. The deal also secures vital future draft capital for Kevin Durant, who failed to elevate the Rockets during their recent postseason run.

On the court, KD fits perfectly with the Cavaliers. Mitchell played with high efficiency last season, and pairing him with Durant creates a powerful scoring duo. Because Cleveland has a deep roster, the team can easily limit the 37-year-old forward’s minutes to protect his health.

Cleveland insider Nick Pedone noted that any real trade talk starts with Jarrett Allen and a couple of future draft picks. While the Harden sign-and-trade route represents a much more aggressive path, it also immediately elevates Cleveland into a legitimate championship contender. Right now, that is the only goal that matters in Cleveland.
