NBL, Boomers star tests positive for recreational drugs — again

Sydney Kings star Xavier Cooks has tested positive for recreational drugs for a second time, but will be free to play in the coming NBL season having already served a one-month ban.

The NBL announced the news in a statement on Tuesday, explaining traces of THC, a psychoactive compound found in cannabis, were found in a drug test during last season’s grand final series against Adelaide which the the Kings won to claim a sixth NBL title.

“I want to sincerely apologise to my teammates, our fans, the club, and everyone who has supported me,” Cooks, 30, said in a club statement.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and understand the disappointment and frustration this has caused.

“I am grateful to Hoops Capital for the support they have continued to provide me throughout this process.”

Cooks, a former NBA and Australian Boomers star, also tested positive to cocaine before the 2024-25 NBL finals when he received a one-month ban.

Hoops Capital, owners of the Sydney Kings, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and said it supported the decision of Sport Integrity Australia through its CEO Mark Thompson.

“We hold ourselves to strong professional standards,” Thompson said.

“When those standards are not met, we respond appropriately and work to ensure our people receive the support, education and guidance they need — not only through the successes but also the challenges that come with professional sport.

“Xavier has completed his period of ineligibility and is back on court with his teammates as pre-season commences.”

Cooks’ latest ban has already been served, concluding on July 4, 2026.
