Knicks veteran explains the championship lesson Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs learned the hard way

The San Antonio Spurs gave their fans hope of ending a decade-long title drought last season with a stellar playoff run. After knocking out the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs entered the NBA Finals brimming with confidence. However, they ultimately fell to the New York Knicks.

Recently, Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns shared his thoughts on what caused the Spurs to surrender multiple leads during the NBA Finals. According to Towns, the difference came down to experience and maturity.

“I think sometimes when you’re a young team you look to not lose the game, and we were looking to win the game. That’s what made us bring such aggression to the game and I think they were just trying to protect the lead,” KAT said.

While New York leaned on a seasoned roster filled with players in their prime, San Antonio reached the Finals with one of the youngest groups in league history. The Spurs had a weighted average age of just 25 years and 20 days, making them the second-youngest team ever to compete in an NBA Finals.

Despite their youth, Wembanyama and the talented Spurs roster displayed remarkable skill and intensity throughout the series. San Antonio built double-digit leads in four of the five Finals games. However, their inability to finish games in crunch time ultimately proved costly.

The Spurs’ only victory came in Game 3, when they earned a 115-111 win at Madison Square Garden. However, the Knicks closed out the series in Game 5 with a 94-90 victory in San Antonio, winning the franchise’s first NBA championship in 53 years.
