However, finishing level on goals does not automatically mean the award is shared. FIFA uses two tiebreakers to determine a winner if players end the tournament with the same goal tally.
Here’s how the Golden Boot is decided if the race ends in a tie.

What is the Golden Boot?
The FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the tournament.
Introduced as the Golden Shoe in 1982 before being renamed the Golden Boot in 2010, the award has been claimed by some of the game’s greatest goal-scorers, including Ronaldo Nazario, Miroslav Klose, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe, plus more surprising stars such as James Rodriguez and Thomas Muller.
FIFA also presents the Silver Boot and Bronze Boot to the players who finish second and third in the scoring charts, respectively.
Golden Boot tiebreakers, explained
If two or more players finish level on goals at the end of the World Cup, the Golden Boot is decided using two official tiebreakers.
The first is assists, with the player who has set up the most goals finishing ahead. Assists are determined by FIFA’s Technical Study Group.
If players are still level on goals and assists, the award goes to the player who reached their goal tally in the fewest minutes played during the tournament.
If players remain level after both tiebreakers, the Golden Boot is shared.
What happens if players finish level on goals?
Finishing level on goals does not automatically mean the Golden Boot is shared.
For example, if two players each score six goals, the one with more assists will finish higher in the standings. If they also have the same number of assists, the player who achieved their tally in fewer minutes wins the award.
Only if the players cannot be separated by either of FIFA’s tiebreakers is the Golden Boot shared.
Has the World Cup Golden Boot ever been shared?
The award has only been shared once, at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
Russia’s Oleg Salenko and Bulgaria’s Hristo Stoichkov each finished the tournament with six goals and one assist, so they shared the prize.
