Chinese Tourist Rebound Boosts South Korea’s Foreigner-Only Casinos
South Korea’s foreigner-only casinos are seeing renewed momentum this year as inbound tourism recovers, and Chinese group travel is expected to pick up in the second half. A recent analysis by Shinhan Securities said the sector is benefiting from stronger visitor flows, with performance increasingly tied to arrivals from overseas.

Inbound Travel Lifts Outlook
Unlike tourism segments that move with domestic consumption, casino results in South Korea are closely linked to inbound traffic. Shinhan said that makes the pace of Chinese visitor growth the main variable for the rest of the year.
Ji In-hae, an analyst at Shinhan, said inbound indicators such as arrivals, foreign spending, and foreigner-only casino earnings are now numerically confirming what the market has been sensing as an inbound boom. The brokerage’s view is that casino earnings should improve across the board, although the degree of recovery will vary by location and customer mix.
The South Korean casino industry operates on foreign tourists alone, with the gambling business restricted by legislation for domestic citizens. Only Kangwon Land has the permission to operate casinos that serve local citizens.
Chinese Group Travel Regains Importance
The outlook has been helped by a temporary visa-free programme for Chinese group tourists launched last September to revive inbound tourism and regional economies. That policy has added support to the casino sector by making travel easier for group visitors from China.
Shinhan said the China-facing positioning of Korea’s foreigner-only casinos remains valid. Ji noted that Busan could emerge as the biggest beneficiary of visa-free group travel, with operators there potentially gaining the most if the trend continues.
The brokerage’s comments suggest that Chinese group travel is again becoming a central factor for casino operators. The return of those visitors has become more important as properties look for a stronger second-half performance.

Operators With The Strongest Upside
Paradise Group was cited as a major beneficiary of the easing travel rules for Chinese group tourists. The company operates Paradise City in Incheon and a foreigner-only casino in Busan, both of which are positioned to benefit from the recovery in Chinese travel.
Lotte Tour Development’s Jeju Dream Tower Integrated Resort is expected to extend its growth path as international flights recover, casino foot traffic rises, and hotel occupancy improves. This mix of trends will result in having more drivers to support the property due to the growth in tourism.
Grand Korea Leisure, which operates the foreigner-only casinos located in Seoul and Busan, should also benefit from the trend. Shinhan said the company should gain from both Chinese VIPs and general foreign tourists as inbound demand rebounds in the country’s major gateway cities.
The analysis indicates that not all operators will recover at the same pace. Instead, the scale of the rebound will depend on where each property is located and which customer segments it serves.
Visitor Numbers Support Recovery
Data from the Korea Tourism Organisation reveal that the total arrival of Chinese tourists from January to May was 2.56 million, an increase of approximately 25% from last year. This reflects the strength of the recovery process and also confirms that the phase of foreign-only casinos is moving into a better stage.
The numbers also help explain why the sector is drawing fresh attention. With Chinese travel rising and casino earnings tied to inbound flows, operators with the right mix of location and customer base may be best placed to benefit.
