Socceroos player ratings vs. Egypt: Heartbreak as Australia lose on penalties at World Cup

Australia has suffered the heartbreak of a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat against Egypt in the World Cup round-of-32 — after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.

Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead after only 13 minutes, but Mohamed Hany’s own goal levelled the match not long after half-time.

Several Socceroos players put in good shifts but there were also disappointing performances as Australia once again failed to win a knockout match at the tournament.

Australia boss Tony Popovic picked an unchanged lineup from the team that drew 0-0 against Paraguay in their final group game.

GK — Patrick Beach: 8

Couldn’t have done much more to save Ashour’s pinpoint header. Didn’t have much else to do in the first half.

Made a world class save in stoppage time to deny Egypt a winner.

Was taken off just before the penalty shootout. Maybe deserved the chance in penalties.

Enjoyed a brilliant World Cup and should get a move overseas.

CB — Harry Souttar: 8

Made a crucial block as Marmoush looked like scoring the second goal for Egypt.

His presence in the box was important in Egypt’s panic to score the own goal.

Continued to make several crucial interventions in the second half and extra time.

Unfortunately missed the first penalty shootout.

Has had a superb World Cup.

CB — Alessandro Circati: 7

Another solid effort in the first half both defensively and on the ball.

Performed well in the second half as well, adding to an impressive tournament overall.

CB — Lucas Herrington: 6

Didn’t manage to step up in time for the second ball during Ashour’s opening goal for Egypt.

The teenager also missed a penalty in the shootout.

He looks like he could be a potential star though and was defensively solid throughout the match.

Is so calm on the ball.

LWB — Aziz Behich: 8

Didn’t impact the match much in an attacking fashion in the first-half. Did have a shot from just outside the box that went straight into the arms of Shobeir.

Stepped up in the second half as he attempted to replace Bos as Australia’s attacking wing back. Put in an excellent defensive shift as well.

Arguably Australia’s best player with a tireless performance throughout the 120 minutes.

CM — Jackson Irvine: 6

Put himself about in the first half. Gave away the foul that eventually led to Egypt’s opening goal from the second ball.

Was certainly involved but maybe lacked a classy touch to change his moments into being decisive.

Would have liked to have had more positive impact in an attacking fashion.

CM — Aidan O’Neill: 8

Put in a solid shift throughout the first period marshalling the area of the field Mo Salah was playing in.

Delivered a brilliant set piece for Australia’s equaliser.

Overall an excellent performance. Was withdrawn before extra time after the power of work he has done in the tournament.

RWB — Jordan Bos: 6

Bustled his way into the penalty area early in the match and was unlucky not to get a shot off on goal.

Was hit by a strong challenge right on half-time which forced him off the field with a leg injury.

AM — Cristian Volpato: 7

Lively early in the match. Struck the crossbar with a long-range shot within the first five minutes

Was easily Australia’s most dangerous player in the first half.

Continued to be the Socceroos’ best outlet in the second half but was taken off when tiring.

AM — Connor Metcalfe: 5

Struggled to get into the game as an attacker but worked hard defensively.

Definitely put in a solid shift but wasn’t really involved in the Socceroos’ best attacking moments

FWD — Nestory Irankunda: 6

Didn’t mark the opening goalscorer on the second ball. Hard to be too critical when he is a young attacker.

Put himself about and fought hard as a lone striker in the first period.

Continued to work hard in the second half but ultimately was withdrawn for Toure.

Socceroos substitutes vs. Egypt

46′ — Kai Trewin: 5

Came on for Bos at half-time and immediately was caught on his heels as Marmoush got in behind him, but the Man City player luckily fluffed the chance.

Had a golden opportunity at the byline to cross the ball for a potential winner but had his ball blocked.

Was under the pump throughout extra time but managed to hold up.

74′ — Mohamed Toure: 5

Had a couple of nice moments running into the channels for the long ball, but really didn’t have much impact.

74′ — Ajdin Hrustic: 4

Was brought on to replace Volpato’s influence but was relatively anonymous when Australia needed creativity.

91′ — Paul Okon-Engstler: 6

Had a couple of nice touches but ultimately didn’t have the time to influence the match.

91′ — Awer Mabil: 6

Worked hard down the right wing but wasn’t able to carve out any decent opportunities.

120′ — Mat Ryan: 5

Was brought on for the penalty shootout but wasn’t able to get near any of them.

Tony Popovic: 5

The Socceroos made a huge call to start Irankunda instead of Toure, and that possibly was the wrong decision with the pacey winger struggling with his back to goal.

Popovic also made the shock decision to sub out star goalkeeper Beach to bring on experienced stopper Mat Ryan for penalties.

It’s a move that is always going to be deemed a pass or fail based on the result of the shootout.

The Australian manager did well to get the Socceroos to the brink of winning a World Cup knockout match.

But maybe the team could have shown a bit more attacking enterprise throughout the tournament.
