Penalties pain: Socceroos eliminated from World Cup by Egypt in shootout shocker

Australia’s long wait for a win the knockout stages of the World Cup continues after a heartbreaking 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Egypt.

After 120 tense minutes the scores were locked 1-1 between Australia and Egypt in the World Cup Round of 32 clash in Dallas.

With just 90 seconds left in extra time Tony Popovic substituted veteran Maty Ryan on for Patrick Beach in anticipation of the penalty shootout.

It was a huge but an understandable call, but in the end it mattered little as Egypt held its nerve as two of Australia’s best players, Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington, missed their attempts.

Australia went first in the shotout with captain Souttar blasting high and right well over the crossbar, with Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir going the wrong way but not needing to make a save.

Saber went next for Egypt, putting his shot powerfully past the outstretched arms of Ryan. 1-0 Egypt.

Jackson Irvine was second up for Australia, calmly slotting to the right corner for 1-1.

Second up for Egypt was Rami Rabia who scored confidently as Mat Ryan went the wrong way. 2-1 Egypt.

Awer Mabil was third for the Socceroos, holding his nerve and calmly sending Shoubir the wrong way. 2-2.

Superstar Mohamed Salah stepped up and floated his shot straight and gently into the back of Matt Ryan’s net for a classy score. 3-2 Egypt.

It was then up to Lucas Herrington, the youngest player in the Australian squad, to keep the pressure on Egypt but the 18-year-old missed off the crossbar as the moment got the better of him to put Egypt on the cusp at 3-2.

Hossam then slotted his shot calmly to make it 4-2, triggering jubilant scenes from the Egyptians while delivering a dagger to Australia who remain winless in knockout football at the World Cup.

Egypt next play the winner of Argentina and Cabo Verde in the Round of 16 while Australia are left to ponder what might have been.
