Ontario’s Online Gambling Market Climbs Again as Casino Play Offsets Sports Betting Slowdown

Ontario’s regulated online gambling market kept moving upward in May, though the latest figures reveal that nearly all of the growth came from one corner of the industry.

Players wagered €6.46 billion across the province’s licensed online gambling sites during the month, a 2% increase from April. The amount operators retained before deductions also edged higher, reaching €280.9 million after another 2% monthly gain.

The numbers show a market that continues to expand at a steady pace rather than through sudden spikes. Casino games remained the clear engine behind that growth, widening the gap between themselves and every other regulated gambling product.

Casino Games Continue to Dominate

Online casino play accounted for €5.71 billion in wagers during May, representing 88% of all regulated online gambling activity in Ontario.

The segment also delivered the strongest financial performance. Revenue climbed to €222.0 million, up 4% from the previous month, reinforcing casinos as the industry’s biggest source of income.

The latest results suggest casino products continue to attract the largest share of player spending, even as the broader market grows at a relatively modest rate.

Sports Betting Slips While Poker Edges Higher

Sports betting was the only major category to move in the opposite direction.

Wagers on sporting events fell to €661.0 million, a 7% decline compared with April. Revenue also softened, dropping 5% to €55.3 million.

Peer-to-peer poker, although still a small part of the regulated market, posted gains in both key measures. Players wagered €91.1 million during May, up 5% month-on-month, while revenue increased 2% to €3.7 million.

The figures point to a market that remains stable overall, with casino gaming continuing to carry most of Ontario’s regulated online gambling sector even as betting activity fluctuates from month to month.
