Germany vs. Paraguay projected lineups, starting 11 for World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match in Boston

Now that the knockout round is underway, Germany hope to put the demons of the last two FIFA World Cup disappointments to bed as they meet Paraguay in the 2026 Round of 32.

Die Mannschaft were eliminated in the group stage in both Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, and while that first hurdle has already been cleared this time around, an immediate exit in the new first knockout round of the expanded tournament would be a similarly terrible result.

It’s not been particularly pretty from Germany so far, as they thumped minnows Curacao 7-1 in their opening match but then narrowly beat Ivory Coast 2-1 before losing to Ecuador 2-1 in a dead-rubber finale.

Paraguay, meanwhile, escaped Group D as a third-place qualifier after victory over Turkey and an ugly scoreless draw with Australia.

Germany projected starting 11

(4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. M. Neuer (GK) — 6. J. Kimmich, 4. J. Tah, 2. A. Rudiger, 22. D. Raum — 23. F. Nmecha, 5. A. Pavlovic — 19. L. Sane, 10. J. Musiala, 17. F. Wirtz — 7. K. Havertz.

  • Injured: Schlotterbeck (knee), Karl (thigh)
  • Suspended: None

The loss of Nico Schlotterbeck due to a knee injury in the group stage has thinned Germany’s defensive ranks considerably, but it does not affect the starting lineup as Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rudiger are both top-tier center-backs.

Manuel Neuer has struggled in goal, but Julian Nagelsmann has resisted murmurs to make the switch to Oliver Baumann in net. Leon Goretzka will be pushing for a start in midfield, but so far Nagelsmann has stuck with Felix Nmecha next to Alexander Pavlovich at the base.

Paraguay projected starting 11

(5-3-2, right to left): 12. Gill (GK) — 4. J. Caceres, 2. G. Velazquez, 15. G. Gomez, 13. J. Canale, 26. Maidana — 16. D. Bobadilla, 14. A. Cubas, 23. M. Galarza — 21. G. Avalos, 19. J. Enciso.

  • Injured: O. Alderete (knee)
  • Suspended: D. Gomez (yellow cards)

Paraguay will be missing a key player in this match, as Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Diego Gomez is suspended due to yellow-card accumulation, having been booked twice in the three group matches.

They will also be concerned by the fitness of Sunderland defender Omar Alderete, who came off late in the scoreless draw with Australia due to a knee injury. It’s not looking good, as he reportedly attempted to train on Saturday but could not, prompting the need to have an MRI.

Germany vs. Paraguay predictions, betting odds

Germany have not been the best team at the World Cup in breaking down bunkered opponents, but Paraguay shouldn’t present the toughest low block they’ve ever faced, either. While this team did well in CONMEBOL qualifying, La Albirroja have struggled in World Cup action against counter-presses, and Germany should generate enough on-ball pressure to get by.

  • Score prediction: Germany 2-0 Paraguay
