‘Battle in Seattle’: Previewing the crucial Australia vs. USA World Cup clash

The FIFA 2026 World Cup got off to a sensational start for the Socceroos on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Turkey.

Australia’s next game of the group stage comes early on Saturday morning (Australian time) in Seattle, Washington against co-hosts USA who were impressive in their 4-1 opening win against Paraguay.

The United States Men’s National Team, or USMNT, will no doubt go into this match expecting another three points, but as Tony Popovic’s men showed against the highly fancied Turkey side reputations mean very little at World Cups, what happens on the pitch is all that matters.

Coached by Argentina’s Mauricio Pochettino since 2024, the USA (15th) sits twelve places higher on the current FIFA World Rankings than Australia (27th) and will enter the Group D match as warm favourites.

How did the USA qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

The USA qualified for the FIFA 2026 World Cup automatically as one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico and did not need to participate in the CONCACAF regional qualification phase.

As such their recent match schedule has consisted entirely of friendlies with wins over Uruguay (5-1), Paraguay (2-1) and Senegal (3-2) countered by losses to Belgium (5-2), Portugal (2-0) and Germany (2-1) in their final warm-up match before the World Cup.

Australia and the USA have met four times at senior men’s level with the USA winning two matches, Australia one and one draw.

Their most recent match came in a friendly last October when the USA defeated the Socceroos 2-1 in Colorado.

Who are the USA’s top players?

The key player for the USA at this World Cup is undoubtedly 27-year-old AC Milan attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic whowas subbed off at half-time in the Paraguay match after taking a knock to his calf but is hopeful of being fit to face the Socceroos. If Pulisic is ruled out, or restricted in any way, it would be a massive blow to the co-hosts.

Other USA stars to watch include Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, Bournemouth defender Tyler Adams and AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun who netted twice in the 4-1 win over Paraguay.

Leading up to the 2026 World Cup several vocal sections the USA media had dismissed the threat posed by the Socceroos, with one of the more publicised comments suggesting victory against Australia would be little more than a ‘layup’ for the USMNT.

Following the Socceroos’ highly disciplined 2-0 defeat of Turkey that tune may have changed somewhat as the world learns once again why it’s never a good idea to underestimate an Australian side in a major tournament — whatever the sport.

‘They’re a difficult team to play against’

Speaking after the Turkey match FOX Sports analyst Kasper Schmeichel delivered a stern warning to US fans expecting another easy three points against the Aussies.

“Take this really seriously because they’re a difficult team to play against,” Schmeichel cautioned.

“I think this says to the US team and maybe to the US fans to not take (winning) for granted yet.”
