Before each of the seven round 12 fixtures this week, a moment of silence will be observed, with both sets of players to also wear black armbands in honour of Daniher during the game.

There are fewer two games this round, due to the first week of mid-season byes taking place, with Adelaide, Gold Coast, North Melbourne and Port Adelaide all having the week off.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon spoke of the importance of honouring Daniher on Wednesday.

“As a game, we felt it was important that we come together this weekend to recognise and celebrate Neale’s extraordinary contribution to football and to the wider Australian community,” he said.

“Neale gave so much to our game as a player, coach and administrator, but his impact extended far beyond football.

“Through his courage, humour, humility and relentless advocacy in the fight against MND, he inspired millions of Australians and gave hope to so many families.

“This weekend is an opportunity for the football community to pause, reflect and honour a remarkable person whose legacy will continue to live across our game and across the country.»

Daniher passed away on Monday, following a brave and inspiring battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), which he was diagnosed with in 2013.

Daniher defied the odds, living for 13 years following his diagnosis, in spite of an initial life expectancy of just 27 months.

His contributions to the sport extend far and wide, with Daniher being a terrific footballer for Essendon before his career was struck down with injuries.

He went onto coach Melbourne from 1998-2007, bringing the Demons to the 2000 Grand Final, where they were ironically defeated by a strong Essendon outfit.

However, it was his work post-football that will be remembered most, with Daniher campaigning to raise awareness about MND, and selflessly funding for research.

Round 12 will begin on Thursday night, with St Kilda hosting Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium, before it concludes on Sunday night at Optus Stadium, with West Coast taking on Essendon.
