UK Online Gambling Market Yield Rises 7% to £1.55bn in Q1 2026

The UK Gambling Commission has released its latest operator data shows that online gambling continued to grow in the first quarter of 2026, with Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) climbing to £1.55bn.

This marks a 7% increase compared to the same period last year, driven largely by slots, which rose 12% year‑on‑year. The Commission noted that this dataset, collected since March 2020, closes out its COVID‑era reporting series.

While overall activity expanded, the number of average monthly active accounts dipped slightly to 13.4 million, down 1% from the previous year.

Slots continue to dominate sector

Slots accounted for £773m in GGY, with spins rising 7% to 25.1 billion and active accounts up 6% to 4.8 million. Despite this growth, average spins per session fell from 136 to 124, and GGY per session slipped from £4.01 to £3.82.

The Commission also reported that sessions lasting more than an hour dropped 12% to 8.9 million, while total sessions increased 18% to 202 million. Average session length fell by two minutes to 15 minutes. Customer interactions rose sharply, up 32% to 5.2 million, most of them automated.

“Some of operators have refined their session length methodology during the previous year which will impact year-on-year comparisons on the number of sessions, sessions over one hour and average session length metrics,” the commission stated.

Real event betting showed simple growth, with GGY up 1% to £600m, though the number of bets fell 8% and active accounts declined 5%.

Offline betting, on the other hand, continues to suffer, dropping 18% to £125m, while self‑service terminals saw a 6% rise in bets and a slight increase in yield.

A year since new stake limits

This quarter marked the fourth since new stake limits for online slots were introduced, with a £5 cap for adults and a stricter £2 limit for those aged 18 to 24. These rules, implemented in spring 2025, continue to shape player behaviour and session patterns.

The Commission stressed that comparisons should be made carefully, as the dataset covers only the largest operators and may include free bets and bonuses.
