‘I have no interest in coaching another NRL club’: Ivan Cleary leaves door open for NSW, rep roles
When Ivan Cleary steps down as Penrith Panthers’ head coach at the end of next season, don’t expect to see him emerge at another club.
Speaking at the announcement of his departure from the Panthers and replacement from 2028 by current Penrith assistant Peter Wallace, Cleary couldn’t have been clearer.
“It’s a decision I haven’t taken lightly, I’ve thought about it for quite a long time and feel it’s definitely the right thing for me, my family and the club,” he declared.
“I feel really strongly it’s the right time for me to step aside.
“I’ve been a player and coach for 35 years, I’m looking to branch out and use my skills, knowledge and experience in other areas, and try and free up a bit more flexibility in terms of lifestyle, particularly for my wife and myself.”

While he will no longer be head coach, Cleary revealed the Panthers had floated the possibility for him remaining in an advisory role around leadership and culture, although he said nothing has been formally agreed.
‘If someone thought I was worthy of a rep job I’d consider that’ says Cleary
Asked if we could expect to see him back in the NRL coaching game with another club, Cleary laughed.
“I have no interest in coaching another NRL club,” he replied.
“If someone thought I was worthy of a rep job I’d consider that probably.”
And with that, the stakes for Laurie Daley to win this year’s State of Origin series with NSW went through the roof.
