Young Dragons halfback facing lengthy sideline stint

The St George Illawarra Dragons have suffered another blow to their difficult 2026 campaign, with young halfback Kade Reed set to spend around three months sidelined due to a hand injury.

According to reports from the Daily Telegraph, Reed sustained the injury during the Dragons’ loss to Newcastle on Saturday in what was just the second NRL appearance of his career.

The setback creates yet another halves reshuffle for interim coach Dean Young, with the Dragons already struggling to find consistency in their spine throughout a winless opening nine rounds of the season.

Reed had been viewed as one of the club’s promising young options as the Dragons looked to inject fresh energy into their attack amid mounting pressure on the side’s senior playmakers.

His injury now leaves the Dragons with limited options heading into the coming weeks, with reports indicating Kyle Flanagan could be recalled to the side, while Daniel Atkinson was a late withdrawal last round due to a minor injury.

Reed’s absence is another frustrating setback for the rebuilding club, particularly given the youngster was only beginning to gain valuable NRL experience at the top level.

There is hope Reed will be able to add to his two NRL appearances later in the season, but for now the Dragons must once again find another solution in the halves as they continue searching for their first win of the 2026 campaign.
