Why did the Eels kick a penalty AFTER their golden point field goal?
Parramatta may have won a dramatic Round 10 match against the Cowboys in Townsville 33-30, but NRL fans everywhere were left scratching their heads at the way the contest ended.

Despite the game having already been decided thanks to a successful golden point field goal to Eels captain Mitchell Moses, referee Liam Kennedy did not immediately blow full time.
Instead, a bunker review saw Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater placed on report for making contact with Moses’ leg in the act of kicking the winning field goal.
With the match already decided under the first-score-wins conditions of golden point, the players waited for the full-time whistle—but it still didn’t come as referee Kennedy then awarded a penalty, insisting Eels five-eighth Ronald Volkman take the kick.

Amongst many questions, it raised the issue of what would happen if the penalty shot missed and was returned by the Cowboys for a try at the other end of the field?
Regardless, Volkman duly slotted the shot from directly in front, delivering the highly unusual golden point scoreline of 33-30.
As for whether the penalty kick ruling was actually correct?
The are somewhat unclear on such an incident and it will be interesting to see if NRL elite football boss Graham Annesley makes a statement to clarify the ruling in the coming days.
That way we’ll all know how to spot when a golden point field goal…. isn’t.
