Koby Evans: Hefty suspension given to Brisbane talent for homophobic slur

Brisbane Lions youngster Koby Evans has been suspended for four matches after self-reporting his own homophobic abuse.

The 18-year-old, who admitted to making the alleged comment in the VFL match vs. Coburg last weekend, will miss rounds 9-12 of the AFL season — and any VFL matches in that period.

In a statement, the AFL made it clear Evans’ suspension was set by the precedent of other remorseful players who had self-reported the offence.

«Evans immediately admitted the conduct and made full admissions in the subsequent investigation that he made a highly-offensive homophobic slur towards a Coburg opponent, which demeans and denigrates persons regardless of their sexuality, the AFL’s statement read.

«He also expressed remorse and was apologetic.

«Evans has received a four-match sanction consistent with previous similar matters where a player has self-reported such conduct.

«He will not be eligible to play for the Brisbane Lions in the AFL or VFL in the period that encompasses Rounds 9 to 12 of the AFL season and any VFL matches that correspond with those AFL rounds.

Evans is yet to make his debut for the Brisbane Lions senior team, but has played five VFL matches after being selected with pick 38 in last year’s AFL draft.
