Only first place in the top division of England’s non-league system earns automatic promotion to the football league, with the teams from second to seventh forced to contest a single-elimination playoff bracket.
York were top on 107 points, two ahead of second-placed Rochdale, who were their hosts at Spotland on Saturday.
What followed will go down in the annals of English football history.

An understandably tense encounter remained goalless heading into a stipulated six minutes of stoppage time, at which point all hell broke loose.
Rochdale had already hit the crossbar in the additional period when, in the 95th minute, their top scorer Emmanuel headed home a wonderful floated cross from 41-year-old veteran midfielder Ian Henderson.

Dieseruvwe’s 99th-minute goal at Braintree last weekend set up this all-or-nothing decider, and he tore off his shirt as understandably jubilant Rochdale fans poured onto the pitch, sure that their team had secured a return to the Football League after a three-year absence.
But there was a sting in the tail. After police and stewards took six minutes to clear the playing area, York still had a little time to desperately chase the goal they needed to take back top spot.
In the 103rd minute, Josh Stones, who performed tirelessly in attack and passed up a couple of good chances, hooked a cross into the Rochdale box. It pinballed around the penalty area and dropped once again to Stones, whose shot was blocked in the goalmouth. Referee Will Finnie consulted his watch and goal-line technology confirmed the ball had crossed the line.

York City and Rochdale prematch joint statement
Prior to the match, the two clubs came together in a moment of solidarity to release a joint statement which called upon the National League and Football League to change its promotion rules.
The unprecedented statement called the leagues to action in a twofold manner, hinting that they believe the fifth tier of English football should be codified as fully professional, while also hinting at changes they believe should be made to the structure of promotion to League Two.
The statement in full reads:
This Saturday’s game brings an end to one of the most thrilling, exciting and unpredictable title races in football history.
Both ourselves and York City have the chance to write our names in National League history.
The National League is no longer a non-league competition. It is effectively a League 3, with fully professional clubs operating at a level equal to or higher than many of those in League 2.
We both understand how important this game is to both clubs and supporters. We both pledge now that whatever happens tomorrow, we will both continue to fight for 3UP.
Both clubs sit on over 100 points. One of us will have to fight once more in the National League Play-Offs. However, we both strongly believe that this shouldn’t have to be the case.
We call on the National League, Football Regulator, EFL and Premier League to come together immediately and resolve this issue, so that we do not have to highlight this injustice year after year.
For both sets of supporters attending the Crown Oil Arena this weekend, we say thank you for being with us all season. The passion you’ve shown for both clubs has been felt across the world. This game will be seen far and wide. We want to showcase this league for all its potential. Keep your support in the stands, not on the pitch, and let’s all protect the game we love.
Thank you!
After the EFL voted to expand its playoff from four to six teams starting in 2026/27, there could be further changes to come for the promotion and relegation structures down the English football pyramid.
