Wild’s Matt Boldy expected to join Wayne Gretzky & Connor McDavid in a historic NHL record
A vast majority of NHL stars typically enter a new season with a chip on their shoulder. Some are out to kill everyone on the ice if their opponents get in the way of a Stanley Cup run. Others are calmer in their demeanor, slowly moving toward their individual goals. There is not yet a clear gauge on where Matt Boldy lands in these two archetypes. However, there is an expectation that he will solidify himself as a Minnesota Wild legend and even an NHL great by the end of the season. Why? It all comes down to entering the same scoring territory as Wayne Gretzky, Connor McDavid and Mike Bossy in a historic record.

Wild’s Matt Boldy projected to enter NHL legend status with a 50-goal and 50-assist season
You read that right! Matt Boldy will be the focal point of the Wild offense. John Hynes will either have him set up Michael McCarron and Kirill Kaprizov with assists. Or, he can skate past defenders to get the puck at the back of the net on his own. This same scheme already got them the third-best record in the Central Division with 46 wins and 104 points; who’s to say it won’t work again?
Boldy had this record within reach before the Olympics but fell short. Despite this, Michael Russo of The Athletic knows that the Wild star is hungry to finally get that 50-goal and 50-assist season.

«Joe Smith predicted that Boldy would score 50 goals and get 50 assists last season, and for a while he was on pace. But alas, Joe was wrong as usual, and Boldy finished with 42 goals and 43 assists. This year, now that I’m making the prediction, Boldy — the NHL’s best bargain contract — will hit the magic numbers. It’s wild that February’s gold-medal game Team USA stud has four years left at $7 million per year. Agent Brian Bartlett must be counting the days before this contract expires,» the veteran analyst declared.
History of the NHL’s 50-50 club
This is a hard NHL record to achieve. The last person to do it was Nathan MacKinnon with 51 goals and 89 assists back in the Colorado Avalanche’s 2023-24 NHL season campaign. Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers currently holds the record for most 50-goal and 50-assist seasons among all active players. He has done so four times in his career.

If Boldy manages to finally get the record, he will join Mackinnon, Draisaitl, Alex Ovechkin, Connor McDavid, David Pastrnak, Mikko Rantanen, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin as the only eight active players to have notched the feat.
When it comes to the larger all-time picture, the Wild star still has a long way to go, but he will get closer to the greats. Wayne Gretzky was a constant member of the 50-50 club for nine seasons, the most out of anyone all-time. He also has the single-greatest 50-50 season. In 1985-86, he scored 52 goals and totaled 163 points with the Edmonton Oilers. When totaled, he had a 215-point output. Gretzky also holds the record for most goals in a 50-50 season. He put up 92 goals alongside 120 assists in the 1981-82 NHL season.
All of these are still a lot for Boldy to accomplish. But even the small step of getting at least one 50-50 season makes him a franchise legend already. See, he would be the first player in Wild history to have ever gotten the feat. He also joins active guys like Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, and Evgeni Malkin, among others, in this small 42-player club.
Will all of this come true for Boldy? Will it help the Wild, led by John Hynes, become Stanley Cup contenders?
