High Court Dismisses National Lottery License Dispute in UK

The High Court has ruled against challenges brought by The New Lottery Company Limited and Northern & Shell PLC, rejecting claims that the Gambling Commission wrongly awarded the Fourth National Lottery License to Allwyn.

The case, heard before Mrs Justice Joanna Smith between October and December 2025, with a final session in January 2026, examined allegations that the Commission had made improper changes to the license arrangements after the competition.

In its judgment delivered today (17 Apr), the court dismissed and confirmed that the Gambling Commission had run a fair and robust process. The ruling also found that none of the contested license modifications were substantial or in breach of procurement rules.

The Commission welcomed the outcome, describing it as an important decision for the future of the National Lottery and a clear endorsement of the integrity of the competition that awarded Allwyn the license.

The judgment gives resounding support to Good Causes by enabling Allwyn, with oversight from the Commission, to continue with their plans of investment in The National Lottery without further distraction. Our priority remains to continue regulating The National Lottery for the benefit of participants and Good Causes,” the commission stated.
