Aussie world No.7 Alex de Minaur has been bundled out of the US Open in straight sets by 30-year-old Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp.

The tournament sixth seed held a 4-0 head-to-head career record going into the the second round match-up, but de Minaur was never comfortable against his hard-hitting opponent, creating just five break point chances in the entire match before going down 6-4 7-5 6-2.

The second round exit is de Minaur’s poorest result at the New York grand slam since 2021 when he was knocked out in the first round by American Taylor Fritz. 

He has also made quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows three times in 2020, 2024 and 2025.

Today’s loss continues a disappointing 2026 season which has seen de Minaur reach the quarter finals of just one major, the Australian Open back in January.

Dane Sweeny upsets 13th seed

With fellow Aussies Tristan Schoolkate, Alexi Popyrin, James Duckworth, Maya Joint and Kimberly Birrell also losing their second round matches, it means Australia has just one player left in the men’s or women’s singles draws, Dane Sweeny who upset Italian 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti in four sets, 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2.

World No.123 Sweeny next plays another Italian in the third round, 21st seed Luciano Darderi on Sunday morning (AEST) ahead of a potential fourth round match-up with world No.2 and top seed Alexander Zverev.
