The Seahawks are planning on signing Arnold, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, attempting to add the former first-round pick to a secondary already teeming with All-Pro talent.

Arnold, selected by the Lions with the No. 24 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was released on June 29, four days after being arrested in connection with an alleged armed robbery and kidnapping that took place in February. The 23-year-old faces eight felony charges related to the incident. All of his charges carry maximum sentences of life in prison.

Here’s what we know about Seattle’s decision to agree to terms with the Alabama product.

Why do the Seahawks plan to sign Terrion Arnold?

Seattle brought in Arnold for a workout earlier in training camp. Clips of the Arnold’s workout session were included in Episode 2 of Hard Knocks. Earlier in the episode, Seahawks general manager John Schneider mulled bringing Arnold into Seattle’s ranks.

The Seahawks’ decision to offer Arnold a contract appears to suggest that the organization has faith that he will be cleared of all or most of his charges and avoid both a prison sentence and a lengthy ban. The upside of bringing in Arnold, a former first-round pick who started all but two games he was available for during his first two seasons, looks to have been too much for Seattle to pass up, at least in the eyes of its front office.

Arnold is twitchy, agile, aggressive and fast. His hands are quick and strong, allowing him to rack up pass deflections thus far in his career. If Arnold shakes free of his legal troubles, he could represent an astute addition for the league’s best defense. That is a monumental if, however. As Schefter notes, the 23-year-old’s charges could land him on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, preventing him from taking part in practices or games until his case is settled.

Terrion Arnold charges

Arnold is facing four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery. All eight charges are felonies. All carry maximum sentences of life in prison.

Arnold was arrested on June 25 in connection with a Feb. 4 incident that saw three people allegedly held hostage, robbed and pistol-whipped after being lured in by multiple people, including Arnold, per Hillsborough County’s police report. He is accused of being the «primary conspiracy» in a plot to lure people he and his friend believed were responsible for the theft of around $250,000 in cash and other valuables.

Arnold and five others are alleged to have held the people they believed committed the heist hostage at gunpoint, robbing them before assaulting them with a pistol whip. Police determined that the people Arnold and his co-conspirators reportedly kidnapped and assaulted had nothing to do with the theft of Arnold’s Airbnb, per multiple reports.

In a statement to TMZ, Arnold’s lawyer denied any wrongdoing. The Detroit News reported that Arnold filed a police report after a Largo, Florida residence he rented was reportedly robbed twice. Among the items taken from Arnold and his friends were $100,000 in cash, an $80,000 necklace, designer bags and a cell phone issued to Arnold by the NFL, per NBC News.

Arnold previously denied any involvement in the case. He turned himself in on June 24. Five days later, Detroit released him.

Will Terrion Arnold be allowed to play for the Seahawks?

At present, Arnold is eligible to play the Seahawks. It remains to be seen whether that will be the case at the start of regular season.

Schefter noted that Seattle will wait to see whether Arnold is placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. Such designation would effectively serve as paid leave for Arnold. He would be unable to play in games or participate in practice.

The nature of Arnold’s charges suggests that he could be placed on the exempt list. His defense argued that Arnold was not present in the room where the crimes occurred. Police say that Arnold watched the kidnapping and robbery unfold via live stream, according to The Athletic.

Multiple teams showed interest in signing Arnold, including the Giants and Texans. He will cost little more than a league-minimum contract, so Seattle could be seen as doing its due diligence in the event that a legal resolution is reached without Arnold receiving serious jail time.

What is the Commissioner’s Exempt List?

The NFL’s player personnel manual defines the commissioner’s exempt list as  «a special player status available to clubs only in unusual circumstances.» The designation prevents listed players from counting against a team’s 53-man roster. Players added to the commissioner’s exempt list are barred from practicing or playing in games. They are permitted to attend meetings and workouts and receive treatments at the team facility, however.

Only commissioner Roger Goodell has the power to place a player on the exempt list.

Players included on the exempt list in recent years include Michael Vick (2009), Adrian Peterson (2014), Greg Hardy (2014), Kareem Hunt (2018) and CeeDee Lamb (2024).
