Cowboys’ Jerry Jones faces tough questions on $52 million decision as camp begins

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson heads into training camp this week playing out the first year of the richest tight end contract in franchise history. His game tape from last season is giving management very little reason to smile.

Dallas signed Ferguson to a four-year, $52 million extension with $30 million guaranteed and a $12 million signing bonus, locking him in as a long-term fixture in Dak Prescott’s passing game. As camp opens on Wednesday, that big bet looks incredibly smart.

Ferguson actually backed up his new payday by catching a career-high 82 receptions for 600 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

But his actual display on the field didn’t match his paycheck. His yards-per-catch dropped to 7.3, continuing a three-year decline. Pro Football Focus graded him 59.4 overall, ranking him 32nd out of 37 qualified tight ends. He also fumbled seven times over the past two seasons and drew 10 accepted penalties since 2024. This is a rough ledger for a player earning top-tier money.

This performance drop is going to land right on Jerry Jones’ desk as training camp kicks off. As the owner and GM personally approve every massive contract in Dallas, meaning Ferguson’s extension was entirely his call.

Rival talent evaluators are clearly noticing the slump on film, too. In an ESPN piece ranking tight ends ahead of the 2026 season, one NFC scout left him completely out of the top ten.

He is still the clear starter and Prescott’s favorite tight end heading into camp. But he is definitely going to face some tough questions once the pads come on out in Oxnard.
