Tony Romo gets final verdict on $18M role

Tony Romo has already been facing significant pressure since his rough AFC Championship broadcast in January. Despite calls for a change, CBS management had previously backed Romo, referring to strong ratings. But his offseason took an ugly turn last week and now the question is whether it costs him his job.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS lead NFL analyst was arrested Thursday in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Romo, 46, was pulled over around 6:18 p.m. while driving south on Interstate 43, just hours after finishing up at the Wisconsin Amateur Championship.

According to sheriff’s records, he struggled with the field sobriety tests before being booked and released. He is now scheduled to appear in court on Sep. 21, which happens to be the Monday night of the NFL’s Week 2 slate.

While CBS has kept quiet publicly and declined to comment, they will not terminate Tony Romo’s $18 million-a-year NFL analyst contract following his arrest, though the former Cowboys star may take a brief step back, according to the Daily Mail.

The report added, “A source has since told the DailyMail that Romo knows he made a ‘terrible decision’ and has ‘disappointed’ his colleagues and family. But CBS will not be firing Romo from its biggest NFL games before the new season, despite already facing calls to axe him over his bizarre performances in the booth last year.”

Romo holds the Cowboys’ record with 248 touchdown passes from his 2004 to 2016 playing career, but his time in the broadcast booth has been rocky.

For now, CBS is sticking with him. Romo will still start his 10th season as the network’s lead analyst next to Jim Nantz for major Sunday games. However, the arrest has already impacted his schedule, forcing him to pull out of the Texas State Open golf tournament.

This incident stains the reputation CBS spent millions to secure years after year. By backing him, the network accepts a massive risk and will face backlash if Romo slips up again.
