How Myles Garrett trade return compares to Micah Parsons, Khalil Mack, other star edge rushers
The Cleveland Browns refused to give in when Myles Garrett requested a trade last February, instead working out a historic contract extension, but they waved the white flag on the future Hall of Famer’s tenure on Monday with a stunning blockbuster trade.
Garrett will spend his 10th season with the Los Angeles Rams, while the Browns, coming off a five-win season, start fresh with a handful of assets to build for the future.
The Rams are sending pass-rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks to the Browns: a 2027 first-round pick, 2028 second-round pick and 2029 third-round pick.
Here’s a look at other recent blockbuster pass-rusher trades and how the Garrett deal compares for the Browns.

Maxx Crosby, March 2026 (trade fell through)
- Ravens to receive: EDGE Micah Parsons
- Raiders to receive: 2026 1st-round pick, 2027 1st-round pick
- Crosby’s 2024 stats: 10 sacks, 20 QB hits in 15 games
The Ravens’ trade for Raiders star Maxx Crosby fell through due to concerns with Crosby’s physical, but the agreed-upon compensation was significant. Baltimore agreed to trade two first-round picks, including the No. 14 pick in this year’s draft, to Las Vegas for the 28-year-old edge rusher before calling off the deal.
The trade was nearly equal to what the Cowboys received for Micah Parsons, except Dallas also had DT Kenny Clark thrown into the deal for the younger Parsons.
Micah Parsons, Aug. 2024
- Packers received: EDGE Micah Parsons
- Cowboys received: 2026 1st-round pick, 2027 1st-round pick, DT Kenny Clark
- Parsons’ 2024 stats: 12 sacks, 23 QB hits in 13 games
The Cowboys refused to meet Parsons’ contract demands ahead of the 2024 season and instead traded the star pass rusher to the Packers after a drawn-out saga that spanned all of training camp. Despite having to commit to a four-year, $188 million deal to complete the trade, the Packers sent two first-round picks and DT Kenny Clark to Dallas.
Garrett has more of a pedigree than any pass-rusher in the NFL after breaking the single-season sack record, but at 30 years old, you could make the case he shouldn’t have drawn exactly the same return Parsons did. It’s worth noting, however, that the 25-year-old Verse is much more valuable of a player than Clark was in Dallas’ return, and the two Day 2 picks are about equivalent to another first-rounder.

Brian Burns, March 2024
- Giants received: EDGE Brian Burns
- Panthers received: 2024 2nd-round pick, 2024 5th-round pick, 2025 5th-round pick
- Burns’ 2023 stats: 8 sacks, 18 QB hits in 16 games
Many believed the Panthers traded Brian Burns a year too late when he was dealt to the Giants, as he was coming off a down year by his standards. Carolina wasn’t able to land a first-round pick for Burns, who signed a five-year contract extension with New York upon being traded, but the Panthers did get a high second-rounder and two fifth-rounders.

Bradley Chubb, Nov. 2022
- Dolphins received: EDGE Bradley Chubb, 2025 5th-round pick
- Broncos received: 2023 1st-round pick, 2024 4th-round pick, RB Chase Edmonds
- Chubb’s 2022 stats before trade: 5.5 sacks, 8 QB hits in eight games
The Broncos snagged a first-round pick from the Dolphins for Bradley Chubb at the 2022 trade deadline, also receiving a fourth-round pick and RB Chase Edmonds while attaching a fifth-rounder to Chubb. Chubb wasn’t nearly as highly regarded as Garrett, so it’s no surprise to see the Browns getting a premium player along with their first-round pick.
Khalil Mack, March 2022
- Chargers received: EDGE Khalil Mack
- Bears received: 2022 2nd-round pick, 2023 6th-round pick
- Mack’s 2021 stats: 6 sacks, 7 QB hits in seven games
The Bears didn’t exactly sell high on Khalil Mack, as he was coming off an injury-shortened season and came with a hefty contract. They weren’t able to get nearly what they traded for him in 2018, landing second- and sixth-round picks from the Chargers in the offseason deal.
Von Miller, Nov. 2021
- Rams received: EDGE Von Miller
- Broncos received: 2022 2nd-round pick, 2022 3rd-round pick
- Miller’s 2021 stats before trade: 4.5 sacks, 9 QB hits in seven games
The Rams didn’t have a first-round pick to trade for Von Miller, as they had already sent a bevy of picks to the Lions for Matthew Stafford earlier in 2021, but they traded the near equivalent of a first-rounder by sending second- and third-round picks to Denver.
Miller was only a rental and was in his 11th season, so two first-round picks wouldn’t have been a realistic return for the Broncos by any means. It was well worth the price for the Rams, who went on to win Super Bowl 56. L.A. is hoping the same formula works with Garrett five years later.

Khalil Mack, Sept. 2018
- Bears received: EDGE Khalil Mack, 2020 2nd-round pick, 2020 6th-round pick
- Raiders received: 2019 1st-round pick, 2020 1st-round pick, 2020 3rd-round pick, 2019 6th-round pick
- Mack’s 2017 stats: 10.5 sacks, 22 QB hits in 16 games
Mack’s situation was remarkably similar to Parsons’, as he was traded at the end of training camp four years into his NFL career and needed a new contract to complete a deal. The Bears paid a premium price for Mack, sending two first-round picks to the Raiders for the former Defensive Player of the Year. The two teams also swapped four more picks, with the Bears receiving second- and sixth-round selections and the Raiders landing third- and sixth-rounders.
The Mack trade included a bit more fluff than most blockbuster pass-rusher, but the Raiders received their demand of two first-round picks. The Browns don’t appear to be landing two first-round picks, but at age 25, Verse might be worth the equivalent of a first-round pick.
