Barcelona have moved quickly to make their first major transfer statement of the summer.

Four days on from the closing 3-1 defeat to Valencia in La Liga, Hansi Flick’s side have reportedly agreed an €80million (69.3m) deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

Bayern Munich had also been linked with the England winger, but BBC Sport reported there was gap in the two club’s valuation of Gordon.

Newcastle were able to drive a hard bargain, on account of the 25-year-old’s contract at St James’ Park running until 2030.

At the same time, the fee Barcelona have agreed to pay will be useful as the club look to revamp their squad following a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

Gordon joined Newcastle from boyhood club Everton for £45m in January and has scored 39 goals in 152 appearances under Eddie Howe. He was part of the squad that ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a domestic trophy, although he missed the 2025 Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool through suspension.

Thomas Tuchel selected Gordon in his England squad for the 2026 World Cup, and he is expected to vie for a starting spot on the left wing with Marcus Rashford, who himself spent last season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United and could yet become a permanent teammate of his compatriot.

The transfer also makes Gordon one of the top 10 most expensive English footballers of all time.

In the table below, we have included all widely reported performance-related add-ons for the deals in question. That makes Jude Bellingham the most expensive England footballer in history.

Bellingham joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund for an initial €103m in 2023, which represented £88.5m at the exchange rate of the time. However, the overall package of add-ons agreed with Dortmund took the overall value of the transfer to €133.9m (£115.15m)

Declan Rice and Jack Grealish are the only other players to have hit the £100m mark.

Gordon enters the list seventh overall, between Jadon Sancho and Dominic Solanke.

Those moves show that big fees are no guarantee of success. Sancho’s 2025/26 stint with Aston Villa was his third consecutive season out on loan. Tottenham have recorded back-to-back 17th-place finishes since bringing in Solanke to lead their attack.

Injuries have been an issue for the former Bournemouth hero, while the same is true to an even greater extent for Mason Mount at Manchester United over the past three years.

Gordon’s move to Barcelona is undoubtedly a huge opportunity, especially as part of an attack that must be reshaped following Robert Lewandowski’s departure. But alongside the likes of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Fermin Lopez, Ferran Torres and potentially Rashford, he will have to fight to carve out a spot in the side.
