Before stunning Pegula 1-6 6-3 6-3, Birrell had never won a main-draw match at a Grand Slam or WTA 1000 on clay.
She has also never won a Grand Slam match anywhere else other than Australia.
Walton’s win over Medvedev 6-2 1-6 6-1 1-6 6-4 was his first ever win over top 10 player — with the Russian ranked world no.8 currently.

The 27-year-old is a late bloomer on the ATP Tour — and actually did beat Medvedev in Cincinnati when the major winner was ranked just outside the top 10.
Walton has a great opportunity to reach the third round with a match against USA’s Zachary Svajda, who is ranked 85.
Birrell will have a tough match-up versus Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova, who nearly beat defending champion Madison Keys at the Australian Open.
