Wembanyama has already shattered the usual development curve expected from young stars, and he continues to earn praise from around the basketball world. Among those impressed is ten-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony.

“We’ve seen a lot of nice guys come through the league, like we seen the best of the best and played against the best of the best,” Anthony said in the “All The Smoke” podcast. “With that being said we’ve never seen nothing like Wemby.”

The timing of Anthony’s comments could not have been more fitting considering what Wembanyama delivered on the court. In Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, he produced the best playoff performance of his career and led the Spurs to the dramatic win.

Wembanyama finished the night with 41 points, 24 rebounds, and 3 blocks while playing 49 minutes. The performance made him the youngest player in NBA history to record a 40-point, 20-rebound playoff game. He also joined a legendary group featuring Shaquille O’Neal, Wilt Chamberlain, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as one of the few players ever to post those numbers this deep into the postseason.

What made the night even more interesting was the timing surrounding the NBA MVP announcement, as Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander accepted his second MVP trophy just minutes before tipoff. Wembanyama openly believed he had a strong case to win the MVP title. 

Following the Thunder’s loss, many began arguing that Wembanyama may have deserved the honor instead. Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson also acknowledged afterward that the MVP result may have added extra motivation behind Wembanyama’s explosive performance.
