Warriors bombshell: Metcalf to request release from club
The NRL player market has been thrown into chaos, with Warriors playmaker Luke Metcalf reportedly requesting a release from the club despite only recently signing a long-term contract extension, according to CODE Sports.

Metcalf is expected to formally seek permission to explore rival opportunities for next season, with the Warriors likely to grant him the ability to negotiate with other clubs as early as this week.
The development comes just days after the Warriors secured in-form halfback Tanah Boyd on a new deal through until the end of 2029, creating a significant selection and salary cap dilemma within the club’s spine.
Metcalf had been one of the NRL’s breakout stars before suffering a season-ending knee injury last year, at one stage leading the Dally M Medal race and emerging as one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking halves.

However, Boyd’s outstanding form during Metcalf’s absence has dramatically shifted the Warriors’ long-term plans, with the club winning seven of its opening nine games under Boyd’s direction in the No.7 jersey.

Since returning from injury in Round 4, Metcalf has spent time at t five-eighth before spending an entire second half on the interchange bench against Parramatta in a move that intensified speculation around his future.
The timing of the situation is significant given Metcalf only signed an extension with the Warriors until the end of 2028 late last season, making the prospect of an early exit a major twist in the NRL market.

Several clubs are already expected to monitor the situation closely, with the Dragons and Bulldogs reportedly viewed as logical landing spots due to their current halves uncertainty and long-term spine needs.
Expansion clubs Perth and PNG are also likely to maintain interest should Metcalf officially become available, particularly given the lack of elite playmakers expected to be on the open market over the coming 12 months.
The Warriors’ decision to re-sign Boyd may now have major ramifications for their spine and ultimately appears set to come at the expense of Metcalf.
It is a significant call for New Zealand, and an even bigger one if discussions escalate into a potential release this season ahead of the June 30 deadline — something the Warriors would be reluctant to entertain and has not been formally requested, but could be raised if Metcalf becomes dissatisfied enough with his role.
There is no doubt clubs would line up for a mid-season transfer, with the situation also having a potential domino effect across the competition if other roster moves are required to accommodate a deal.
At this stage, however, one thing appears increasingly clear: Metcalf is highly unlikely to play for the Warriors beyond this season, and he will have no shortage of suitors.
