‘Game changer’: NRL introduces health screening for past players

Player health has been firmly in the spotlight during the first two months of 2026 NRL season, particularly in terms of concussion management and injuries attributed to the increasing speed of the game.

While those conversations relate primarily to current players, the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has launched a Past Player Health Screening and Referral Service designed to support former elite players.

Available free of charge to retired players who have represented at NRL, NRLW, Kangaroos or Jillaroos level, the service was developed by the ARLC with input from former players James Graham and Mark Carroll.

Having undertaken an initial pilot screening service, the NRL is now embarking on an awareness campaign to ensure all past players are aware of the service.

“This is a game-changer,” James Graham said on the announcement.

“Every elite player will be able to access expert advice and a full health screening, it’s a great step for the game to ensure players are cared for in retirement.”

The service includes advice and evaluation from NRL Medical Officers, a detailed health questionnaire, full medical screening and an appointment with a neuropsychologist for cognitive testing.

A dedicated NRL Medical Coordinator will also assist participants through the process and coordinate with the individual’s GP and family.

“This is the first time the game has provided a comprehensive medical service for every professionally retired player,” ARLC Chairman, Peter V’landys AM said.

“While players are on the field, they have access to first-class medical care and support, we want that care to continue after retirement, so former players can enjoy the same quality of life as everyone else.”

“Player wellbeing and safety is a core priority for the Commission, and I strongly encourage every retired player to take advantage of this service.”
