WWE WrestleMania 42 night two results, match grades: Roman Reigns, Rhea Ripley are champions again

For years, Roman Reigns proved to the world that he owned WWE. It took almost two years, but WWE is his yard again after beating CM Punk during Night 2 of WrestleMania 42 for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The match, and Night 2 in general, had a true WrestleMania feel to it, blowing Night 1 out of the water. In the end, Reigns, who was by Punk’s side in 2012 as a member of The Shield, overcame his demons and beat Punk to return to the top of the mountain.

The match was an epic main course for what was a satisfying night for WWE.

“Mami” is back to being a champion as Rhea Ripley beat Jade Cargill to win the WWE Women’s Championship. Ripley overcame interference from Michin and B-Fab, as well as Jade’s power. She had Iyo Sky by her side, and Ripley continued her good luck at WrestleMania with a win.  

Finn Balor returned to his “Demon” form for the first time in years and earned a deserved WrestleMania moment by beating former Judgement Day brother Dominik Mysterio.

Trick Williams showcased his skills to an audience that wanted everything to do with him and nothing to do with Sami Zayn. Williams, with Lil Yachty, beat Zayn to win the United States Championship.

Penta retained the Intercontinental Title after an epic ladder match. Rey Mysterio performed like he wasn’t 51 with bad knees. Je’Von Evans stood out and proved he’s ready to hold gold sooner than later.

Meanwhile, Oba Femi proved to be the new “The Next Big Thing” after taking out Brock Lesnar in just a matter of minutes to open WrestleMania. Lesnar retired after the match, though he could compete again if goaded by someone like Gunther when SummerSlam comes to Minnesota.

Welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of night two of WrestleMania 42.

5 p.m. ET: An hour before showtime, it was announced Finn Balor vs. Dominik Mysterio is now a Street Fight. 

5:15 p.m. ET: It appears Pat McAfee is officially done with WWE after Randy Orton lost last night, per his wife. Will that last? 

5:17 p.m. ET: Cody Rhodes is not medically cleared. Three sutures, multiple staples. His eye is shut. No timetable for the champion. 

5:56 p.m. ET: Joe Jonas has arrived at WrestleMania to sing the Star Spangled Banner.

6 p.m. ET: Night 2 of WrestleMania has begun! 

6:04 p.m. ET: John Cena is back out in his suit, ready to host WrestleMania. Because they are on ESPN, WWE has to start with something big.

6:08 p.m. ET: Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar opens WrestleMania. It’s a massive test for Femi. Will this be a quick match or will WWE try and make it go long? Femi has so much aura.

Paul Heyman introduced Lesnar. He called him the real ruler of WrestleMania. They locked up to start, neither backing down. Lesnar took over but Femi shouted and knocked Lesnar down. Lesnar tried to clothesline him, but Femi shook it off and took him down with one. The crowd was loving it. 

Femi tried grabbing Lesnar from the outside, but Lesnar took him outside and took over. Suplex City. Three suplexes from Lesnar. Femi with a big elbow and uppercuts. Lesnar with an F5 but Femi got up. Chokeslam by Femi. Fall from Grace and Femi won!

Match went a lot longer than I expected. However, Femi did exactly what he needed to do to look like a true star. The future has arrived. 

Grade: A+

Lesnar took off his gloves and boots in the ring, a la what MMA fighters do when they retire. The fans chanted «Thank you Lesnar.» So is Lesnar not retiring at SummerSlam in Minnesota?

Penta vs. Je’Von Evans vs. Dragon Lee vs. JD McDonagh vs. Rusev vs. Rey Mysterio in a Ladder match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship is next.  McDonagh, Rusev and Lee did not get entrances for WrestleMania. Instead, ads were played. 

Penta retains Intercontinental Title following epic ladder match

Bodies were flying everywhere. The three lucha stars faced off in the ring. Penta and Lee tried to take out Rusev. Rusev set up a ladder on the outside. Evans was a standout in the match. Penta and Mysterio had a few moments to shine. 

Rusev used his strength to take over. McDonagh took out Rusev after multiple attempts. Evans with a leaping clothesline and took out McDonagh from one of the ladders. Mysterio with a 619 to a down Lee. Evans leapfrogged over Mysterio. He used his agility to make things chaotic. 

Lee to a dropkick to Mysterio, who was hanging on the ladder. Rusev was back on the attack. Mysterio took out Rusev with a West Coast Pop onto a ladder on the outside. 619 to Penta. Lee got taken out by Mysterio but managed to hit him with a Styles Clash. McDonagh with a Spanish Fly to Lee.

Penta with a Mexican Destroyer to McDonagh on the ladder. Evans had the title in his hands. Rusev forced him down. OG Cutter from Evans to Rusev from the ladder. Mexican Destroyer to Evans. Penta got the title to retain. What a match. 

That was a car crash as expected. Thought Evans would be crowned but he looked like a star, even with a loss. Penta gets his moment. Rey Mysterio doesn’t age. A better start to WrestleMania today. The only gripe from the match: entrances getting cut.

Grade: A-

Sami Zayn, coming out to massive boos, defends the United States Title against Trick Williams (who has Lil Yachty in his corner). Boos for Zayn feels odd. Trick is over. He also has so much aura.

Trick Williams wins United States Title at WrestleMania

Trick started hot but Zayn took over right away. He kept on getting booed. Trick got some momentum, hitting a back neckbreaker. A Book End by Trick. Blue Thunder Bomb by Zayn. He unloaded on Trick on the floor. Zayn took a shot at Lil Yachty. 

Zayn with a Brainbuster on the apron to the outside. Helluva Kick by Zayn on the outside. Yachty distracted Zayn and Trick almost won the match. Trick went for the Trick Shot. Zayn with an Exploder into the corner. Helluva Kick attempt. Williams with a Trick Shot to win the title.

The match could have used more time, like night one. But it did get the job done in putting Trick Williams over. 

Grade: B

«Demon» Finn Balor takes out Dominik Mysterio in Street Fight

Mysterio appeared to be afraid of The Demon. Balor attacked Mysterio, not selling any of the latter’s moves. Balor with a kendo stick to Mysterio. He tried taking out a table, but Mysterio flew on top of him and used the kendo stick himself.

Chairs got brought into the ring. They exchanged moves. Mysterio with a 619. He landed a Frog Splash but Balor kicked out at one. Balor kicked Mysterio into the corner. Coup de Grace attempt but Mysterio hit Balor with a chair to the head. Balor recovered. Slingblade to Mysterio. Mysterio pushed Balor through a table. 

Mysterio with multiple chair shots. He put the chair around Balor’s neck and hit a 619. Frog Splash for two. Mysterio took out a table. Balor got up and hit Mysterio with chair shots. Dropkick with a chair on Mysterio’s neck. Coup de Grace onto Mysterio’s through a table for the win. 

Dominik Mysterio and Finn Balor gave it their all. «The Demon» gimmick took away from the match, but it still entertained. Balor gets a big win against Judgement Day.  

Grade: B-

Jade Cargill vs. Rhea Ripley for the WWE Women’s Championship is next. It’s a massive opportunity for Cargill to prove she can be one of the top stars in WWE. Can she keep up with Ripley? Cargill, the champion, coming out first? Oh, not a good omen. 

Rhea Ripley back on top as ‘Mami’ beats Jade Cargill for gold

Jade used her power to take out Ripley, normally the dominant one in the ring. Powerslam by Jade. She took over on the outside. The pace slowed down. Crossface by Jade. Ripley finally landed some shots. She took over, dropping Jade on her face. 

Hip toss by Jade. Elbows and kicks traded by both. Spinebuster by Jade for two. Ripley avoids the Jaded. She landed a hurricanrana and a kick. Michin and B-Fab distracted Ripley and the referee. Ripley got assaulted by all three women. Sand Storm by Jade (One Winged Angel) but only for two.

Iyo Sky, who should have competed at WrestleMania, saved Ripley. She beat up Michin and B-Fab. Jade tried to kick Sky. Ripley with a headbutt and a Riptide attempt. Big boot by Jade. Jaded attempt turned into a Riptide for the win. 

The match did not click as well as it could have. Felt like a Night 1 match. Ripley is back on top. Back to the drawing board for Jade. 

Grade: C+

Cena back out. The attendance for Night 2: 55,255. Overall weekend attendance: 106,072. WrestleMania 41 overall attendance at the same arena: 118,641.

The Miz came out to interrupt John Cena. He wanted a WrestleMania moment. Danhausen came out. He said he admired Cena. A kid punched Kit Wilson below the belt. Danhausen did the same to Miz. Five Knuckle Cursed Shuffle to Miz. Danhausen «mysteriously vanished.»

The main event is up next: A match with years of storytelling behind it. CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns. From The Shield to today, it’s time to settle a score. The OTC vs. The Best in the World.

Roman Reigns vs. CM Puk delivers at WrestleMania, Reigns wins gold

They stared one another down to start things off. Punk big brothered Reigns. Reigns tried to outpower Punk. Samoan Drop to Punk. Chop by Punk, right hand by Reigns. Reigns forced Punk to the outside. He bullied him by the barricade. 

Reigns showboated and Punk took advantage. Punk did the same and Reigns took advantage this time. Reigns talked trash to Punk and hurt him by the ropes. Reigns tried for the Superman Punch, but Punk countered. Punk hit a crossbody. Knee to the corner and bulldog by Punk.

Punk tried for the GTS, but Reigns halted his momentum. Superman Punch for two. High knee by Punk as Reigns went for the Spear. Another high knee. Punk forced him to the outside, put Reigns onto the announce table and posed on him while on the table. Punk went up top and attempted to land an elbow through the table. 

They traded shots on the apron. Punk had Punk hanging from the ropes and landed a Superman Punch. And another. And a third. Very creative. Reigns took the steel steps and hit Punk with them. Punk is bleeding. Reigns with a Shield Bomb through the Spanish announce table. Reigns finally put Punk in he ring. He went for the Spear but Punk hit the GTS for two. 

Another GTS attempt but Reigns landed the Spear for two. Reigns shoved Punk’s face into the mat, realizing he’s losing control. They traded punches. Reigns with a GTS attempt, but Punk countered. Punk teased a Superman Punch and connected, but only for two. 

Punk took an Ula Fala and wore it. He tried a Spear but Reigns locked in the Guillotine. Rollup by Punk to an Anaconda Vice. Reigns with a Guillotine. Punk tried a Sharpshooter, but Reigns got him back in the Guillotine. Punk got out of it. They both lay one another out. 

They talked trash to one another in the middle of the ring. Trading shots, the fans were into it. Knees and headbutts were traded. Punk took off his tape. He hit Reigns with it and then hit Reigns with a low blow (after the referee was distracted) and GTS for two. Elbow after elbow by Punk. 

Punk put Reigns on the announce table. He hit the Elbow Drop and broke the table. GTS connected. Reigns fell right back on Punk’s shoulders but Punk collapsed. Spear by Reigns. Punk tried to fight back. Reigns with a Spear and he won. 

Was Punk injured for real? Regardless, that match was fantastic. Both gave it their all, delivering when Night 1 couldn’t. Reigns and Punk get a true WrestleMania moment.

Grade: A+
