The arrests were made on August 26 after local residents reportedly alerted authorities to people running online gambling activities from makeshift structures in the area. Security personnel then carried out further checks before moving in.

The three men were allegedly in Myanmar illegally after crossing the border. They were detained about 26 kilometres southeast of Mongyai and roughly 5 kilometres south of Manphai Village.

Makeshift Operation Discovered

The raid uncovered a 50-by-20-foot corrugated iron building with bamboo walls, along with five temporary tarpaulin shelters.

The equipment seized gives a clearer picture of the operation. Authorities recovered 25 mobile phones, five all-in-one computers, two power stations, a Starlink device, 10 communication radios and other materials linked to the suspected gambling activity.

The use of temporary shelters appears to have been part of the operation’s setup. Authorities said the structures had been built to provide places for both living and conducting the activities.

The arrests come as Myanmar authorities intensify a wider campaign against online scams and scam-linked gambling operations, particularly in border regions where such networks have increasingly operated.

Suspects Face Legal Action

The three detainees are expected to face action under existing laws after questioning and further investigation. Authorities said the seized equipment will be dealt with under established procedures.

Officials also plan to dismantle and destroy the illegally constructed shelters used by the suspects.

The operation in Mongyai is part of a broader effort to prevent online scam gambling networks from establishing bases inside Myanmar. For authorities, the challenge is not limited to identifying operators. Temporary sites, communications equipment and rapidly assembled infrastructure can allow such operations to relocate when pressure increases.

In this case, information from residents helped security forces locate the suspected operation before it could become more established.
