The figures underscore the ongoing significance of major sports and the evolution of consumer behaviors, smartphones, and digital payment systems for the digital betting market in Mexico.
World Cup Drives Record Transaction Growth
The STP internal data revealed a significant surge in online gaming and betting activity during the 2026 World Cup. According to the company, the tournament is one of the events that has the highest impact on transactions for the digital betting sector in Mexico.
The expansion is part of the nation’s increasing acceptance of online gambling. Mordor Intelligence estimates that the market for online gambling in Mexico will expand from $0.79 million in 2025 to $1.09 million by 2031, at an 8.6% CAGR.
The mobile channel is already responsible for 63.9% of the market activity, highlighting the importance of digital channels in the sector’s growth.
Younger Users and Digital Adoption Shape the Market
The Mexican market is also being influenced by changing demographics. A 16.7% annual growth rate is expected to drive the segment of people under 25 years old to be the fastest-growing segment by 2031, accounting for 49.4% of the market.
The area of central Mexico accounts for 41.3% of the market geographically. But the central-northern area is seeing even faster growth, indicating a trend for digital betting to move away from the country’s biggest population centres.
Smartphones, digital wallets and the ever-evolving online landscape are opening up fresh opportunities for betting operators, but also bringing up concerns about responsible gambling and consumer protection.

Payment Infrastructure Supports Industry Expansion
STP also pointed to the increasing number of brands using its payments platform in the gaming and betting space. The company says the expansion is a sign of a greater level of formalisation in the sport and increased choice for consumers at big sporting events.
Jaime Márquez Poo, STP’s Executive Director of New Business, said: “The balance left by this championship confirms a trend we had already been observing: more and more users in Mexico trust digital platforms to place their bets. The numbers from this tournament are the clearest reflection of the maturity that the digital entertainment industry has achieved in the country.”
The payments infrastructure is especially relevant as wagering is trending to mobile. Enabling quicker digital transactions and broader access to online payment solutions can help expand participation during an unusually high sporting interest.
World Cup Becomes a Key Betting Driver
Ipsos Mexico’s research also indicates that there is a high level of awareness of betting in Mexico. A survey around the 2026 World Cup found that 40% of those who responded to the survey were very or somewhat familiar with betting.
Of those who were already familiar with the activity, 34% had actively participated in betting during football matches. This indicates that large-scale events can be not only a time with a higher number of transactions but also a time when new bettors interact with betting platforms.
The trend follows what is typically seen in the global betting market: big matches like the FIFA World Cup or the Super Bowl are typically followed by a surge in sports betting.
The 431.75% rise over 2022 is a strong testament to the speed of digital betting participation around major sporting events in Mexico. Meanwhile, the growth emphasizes the importance of responsible gambling provisions to continue to develop the market.
