The 2026/27 Premier League season got under way in pedestrian fashion as defending champions downed newly-promoted Coventry City by an overwhelming 3-0 scoreline on Friday.

The Gunners got goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard, but it was new signing Christos Tzolis who was the real star of the show at the Emirates. The Arsenal left winger was unlucky not to be credited with an assist, as he generated the turnover that led to the opening goal and essentially fed Saka for their second.
With fellow new signing Bruno Guimaraes picking up a groin injury in the Community Shield last weekend, it meant England international Declan Rice was forced back into the lineup, and he starred alongside Myles Lewis-Skelly in midfield for the Gunners as they controlled the pace of the game both in and out of possession.
The victory sees Arsenal start off with a strong three points, while last year’s Championship title-winners Coventry have plenty of work to do, especially at the back as poor defending and goalkeeping were on full display in this game.
The Sporting News followed the match live, with updates, highlights, and analysis from the prematch festivities to the postgame interviews.

(All times ET)
FULLTIME: Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City
4:52 p.m. — A comprehensive start to the Premier League campaign for Arsenal, as they deservingly cruise to victory with a three-spot over newly-promoted Coventry in their season opener.
It was unfortunate not to be able to rest Declan Rice, but otherwise it’s a very successful 90 minutes for Arsenal as they begin their title defence with three points. On the flip side, it’s a splash of cold water to the face for Coventry City, who will want better performances in the effort to stay up in the top flight by the end of it.
86th min: Chance, Coventry City!
4:43 p.m. — A cross from the left flank finds the head of substitute Jack Rudoni unmarked in front of the Arsenal goal, but he flubs the chance and puts it straight at the feet of David Raya who catches comfortably on the bounce! A disappointing finish.
76th min: Substitution
4:33 p.m. — Arsenal are making two more substitutions, with Mikel Merino and Eberechi Eze coming on to replace Christos Tzolis and Martin Odegaard. Arsenal have done well to put their foot on the game’s windpipe, doing it in typical Mikel Arteta fashion with out-of-possession defending as opposed to in-possession sitting on the ball.
Tzolis gets a big hand from the crowd, who are appreciative of the new signing’s strong start to the season.
A few minutes later, Riccardo Calafiori is also replaced, this time by Piero Hincapie.
68th min: Substitution
4:25 p.m. — Mikel Arteta’s first substitutions of the game see Arsenal protect their England internationals in Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, as Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke come on.
The Arsenal boss was beaten to the substitution punch a few minutes prior, though, as Frank Lampard made the first change of the game in the 62nd minute, replacing the booked Caleb Yirenkyi with Victor Torp. That was followed shortly after as new Coventry City signing Taiwo Awoniyi replaces Ellis Simms up front, while Jack Rudoni takes over for Brandon Thomas-Asante.
49th min: GOAL! ARSENAL!
4:06 p.m. — MARTIN ODEGAARD BAGS A THIRD FOR ARSENAL! It’s a truly horrible goal for Coventry City to concede, so bad that Odegaard has a look of embarrassment on his face as he celebrates!
The Norwegian finishes a looping slow-roller to the near post after a cutback from Ben White on the byline. The goalkeeper Carl Rushworth had guessed that Odegaard was going to the far post, and couldn’t re-contort his body back towards the ball to stop it! Neither defender in the way could get a block either, so the ball trickled over the line!

2nd half kickoff
4:03 p.m. — The game is back under way, with no changes from either side. That means, for now, Gabriel will continue at the back for Arsenal!
HALFTIME: Arsenal 2-0 Coventry City
3:47 p.m. — It’s been a comprehensive performance from Arsenal as they have a multi-goal lead after the first 45 minutes of the Premier League season.
Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka have the goals, but the standout performers lie elsewhere in the squad. The most notable individual is Christos Tzolis, who has been a menace down the left for Arsenal and has enjoyed immense volume in the buildup. It has taken the weight off Saka, and seen Tzolis terrorise Milan van Ewijk down the Coventry right.
Also impressing are the midfielders for Arsenal, as the movement of Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly have caused Frank Lampard headaches. How many will the Gunners score today against their newly-promoted opponents?
34th min: Yellow card
3:34 p.m. — Now Gabriel of Arsenal is shown a silly yellow card after wrestling down Ellis Simms of Coventry City just outside the Arsenal penalty area.
Gabriel was seemingly injured after being tackled earlier in the half, and hasn’t looked totally fit since. Between the potential knock and now a booking, you wonder if he’s a candidate to be replaced at halftime or the hour mark. Something for Mikel Arteta to consider, with Piero Hincapie available.

27th min: Yellow card
The first booking of the 2026/27 season is shown to Caleb Yirenkyi of Coventry City whose overtly handsy play in midfield sees Myles Lewis-Skelly yanked to the ground, and Thomas Bramall goes to the pocket.
23rd min: GOAL! ARSENAL! 2-0
3:22 p.m. — BUKAYO SAKA MAKES THE MOST OF A GOALKEEPING MISTAKE! The Gunners double their lead on what was in effect an extremely tame low, lateral cross from Christos Tzolis on the left. It appears easy for the Coventry City defenders to deal with, but instead goalkeeper Carl Rushworth comes out and dives to divert the cross, palming it straight in the path of Saka who buries the chance.

15th min: GOAL! ARSENAL! 1-0
3:15 p.m. — KAI HAVERTZ PUTS THE GUNNERS IN FRONT! It’s far too easy for the defending champions, who go long down the left and Christos Tzolis snatches the ball away in the attacking third. He gives it to Riccardo Calafiori who feeds a lateral cross along to Havertz from about 16 yards out, and Coventry defender Aurele Amenda is slow to react and step up, allowing the German international to meet the ball and redirect it into the back of the net inside the far post!

10th min
3:10 p.m. — Arsenal have been in control for most of this match. Christos Tzolis has had two efforts at goal, plus one from Bukayo Saka and a long-range effort from Declan Rice, but all of them have sailed over the crossbar or been blocked.
Coventry City have looked tidy in possession and presented a minor danger on the counter, but it’s not been much for Arsenal to work against, and the visitors have struggled to stop the Gunners’ build-up when out of possession.
Kickoff
3 p.m. — Here we go! The 2026/27 Premier League season is UNDER WAY! Arsenal will hope to take their first step towards a title defence, but Coventry City hope to give their fans a jolt to begin the new top-flight campaign.
Prematch
2:45 p.m. — New Arsenal signing Ezri Konsa has been unveiled to the Arsenal crowd before kickoff. He will likely back up Gabriel and William Saliba, but as a right-sided defender, he will be important in seeing out the time Saliba is sidelined with his back injury.

2:30 p.m. — Jamie Carragher has said that Coventry City boss Frank Lampard is a «future England manager» after taking the Sky Blues to the top flight.

2:15 p.m. — Mikel Arteta has spoken about Bruno Guimaraes’s injury, saying that he has a «slight tension in his groin» thanks to the lack of preseason ramp-up he has had with the club. Doesn’t sound too serious, but Arteta has been hard to trust with injuries in the past.
2 p.m. — The presence of Declan Rice in the Arsenal lineup is a boon for the Gunners for sure, but it also represents the trouble with their squad at the current moment. The signing of Bruno Guimaraes was meant to take the load off the England international and allow him to recover from the nerve issue he has been facing for the last year, but instead the Brazilian misses out, forcing Rice back into the lineup.
It was believed that after the World Cup where Rice as unable to last 90 minutes regularly, he would be given extended time off, but as it stands, he is needed once again and is back in the lineup straight away. If he’s starting against Coventry, you’d imagine it would be hard for Mikel Arteta to drop him against the likes of Aston Villa and Chelsea coming up, unless absolutely necessary.

1:45 p.m. — Lineups are in! As was reported, Bruno Guimaraes does not appear in the Arsenal squad, nor does Gabriel Martinelli who has been frozen out of the first-team squad. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice both start, the latter of which is a surprise given the painful nerve issue he has been playing through.
Coventry City line up exactly as expected, with last year’s leading scorer, American international Haji Wright, not in the squad due to an injury picked up in preseason. 25-year-old Ellis Simms leads the line, flanked by Ghana international Brandon Thomas-Asante.
1:30 p.m. — Coventry City are back in the Premier League for the first time since the early 2000’s. They did the league double over Arsenal in the 1993/94 season, but since then, they have won just once in 14 top-flight meetings against the Gunners. A result today against the defending champions would be a memorable one indeed!
1:15 p.m. — There are reports ahead of today’s match that new signing Bruno Guimaraes will miss out due to injury. He started in the Community Shield last weekend and impressed, but has apparently picked up a fitness issue that could keep him out «a few weeks» according to Luke Edwards of The Telegraph.
1 p.m. — Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Arsenal vs. Coventry City in the season’s first Premier League match. It begins the title defence for Arsenal who are on the hunt for not just a repeat atop the league table, but also more silverware after falling just short in other peripheral competitions last season.
