But recently, amid the talks, ESPN has made a big decision about the former NFL punter-turned-broadcaster.

ESPN adds Pat McAfee to Monday Night Countdown for 2026

The network announced that McAfee is joining the Monday Night Countdown crew for the 2026 season. He will be alongside host Scott Van Pelt and returning analysts Jason Kelce and Marcus Spears, with Jason McCourty also coming aboard as a new addition. The pregame show airs ahead of every Monday Night Football broadcast, putting the 39-year-old in one of the most-watched weekly windows.

In the official statement, ESPN wrote, «Host Scott Van Pelt is back alongside returning analysts Kelce and Marcus Spears, with new additions Pat McAfee and Jason McCourty.»

Timing of this new role lines up directly with the extension buzz. According to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, the move also positions the former Indianapolis Colts star to be a «large part» of ESPN’s Super Bowl coverage in February 2027.

Most importantly, it will be the network’s first time broadcasting the Super Bowl. That alone signals how much weight ESPN is putting behind him heading into a new deal.

Marchand reported that McAfee has long been expected to take a bigger role in the broadcaster’s NFL coverage, given he was said to be in contract extension talks for a deal that would pay him as much as $65 million per year.

ESPN is already its biggest NFL broadcast window around McAfee. However, he will keep hosting his daily talk show on ESPN, but joining Monday Night Countdown gives him his first permanent seat at the network’s main NFL pregame desk.
