Australian tennis enigma Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for cocaine at this year’s ATP 250 Mallorca Open.

The 31-year-old submitted a sample during the Spanish tournament in June — where he lost in the first round of the men’s singles — that was subsequently found to contain benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

Kyrgios has been provisionally suspendedsince 4 August and, to date, has chosen not to appeal the decision of the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

Plagued by injuries in recent years Kyrgios has played just four singles matches in 2026 and last featured in the men’s doubles at Wimbledon, where he lost in the first round partnering with with Russian-Kazakh player Alexander Bublik.

In a story post on Instagram, Kyrgios said he took responsibility for the suspension, admitting he’d made a ‘huge mistake’.

“My body hasn’t been able to do what my mind expects it to do,” he wrote.

“Coming to terms with being near the end of my career has been harder than I ever imagined.

“None of that excuses what I did.”

Cocaine is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list, classified as both a stimulant and a substance of abuse.

Kyrgios has previously been highly critical of other doping cases involving top-ranked tennis players including Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek.
