Just days after stepping down from the Queensland State of Origin coaching job, Billy Slater has gone on the record with his views about coaching the Melbourne Storm.

Speaking on the Sunday Footy Show on Nine the 43-year-old reiterated that NRL coaching isn’t something he’s especially interested in pursuing. 

But in the same breath he then refused to completely rule out taking charge of his former club if the opportunity presented itself when Craig Bellamy retires.

“I’ve always said that I don’t see myself as an NRL coach, I love the position I hold at Channel Nine… but you never say never, the Melbourne Storm have been a big part of my life for half of my life,” he said.

“Obviously Craig Bellamy’s last year is next year, but right now I don’t see myself coaching,” Slater continued.

The Storm has consistently made it clear they would be very interested in club legend Slater should he make himself available, with Storm CEO Justin Rodski speaking glowingly just last week.

“At this point, Billy will continue next year (2027) supporting our football program in his part-time specialist coaching role,” Rodski told Newswire last Friday.

“We haven’t had any discussions with Billy beyond that… but Billy is a high-quality, high-calibre, respected champion of the Melbourne Storm and also as a person in rugby league.

“If there’s an opportunity at the right time to sit down and have a discussion with Bill about what the future looks like beyond 2027, we would absolutely do that.”
