Josh Papali’i has announced he will retire from professional rugby league at the end of the 2026 season.

It was already known this would be his 16th and final year with the Green Machine and, barring injury, the 34-year-old will end his playing career with 343 NRL matches — all for the Raiders.
The news was announced in a Raiders statement on Monday ahead of Papali’i’s final home match on Friday night against Brisbane.
It means the man they call ‘Big Papa’ won’t be heading to Super League in 2027 as was widely tipped, but rather hanging up his boots.

Born in Auckland and raised in Brisbane, Papali’i made his NRL debut in 2011 under then Raiders coach David Furner.
In addition to becoming the most capped first-grade player in Canberra Raiders history, Papali’i also made 24 appearances for Queensland and played 11 Tests for the Kangaroos.
