Dallas Cowboys
Tony Romo is one of the most elite quarterbacks to play in the NFL and is largely remembered for playing his entire 14-year career with the Dallas Cowboys. Despite entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2003, he went on to shatter passing records for the franchise and earned four Pro Bowl selections.

After retiring from the sport back in 2017, he decided to pursue a career in the media. He was the lead NFL color commentator for CBS Sports, though his future in that role now remains uncertain after a recent incident.
Tony Romo’s future in CBS remains uncertain
Romo was arrested July 23, 2026, in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office records and released body-camera footage showed he was stopped on Interstate 43, performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and was cited for an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
While he was simply booked and released soon after, CBS decided to place him on indefinite leave a week later. He is currently scheduled to appear before court on September 21, 2026. With this looming situation, CBS Sports president David Berson gave an update during the “NFL on CBS” media day, which was not attended by Romo.
Berson said, “It’s an evolving situation and we are still assessing. There is no timetable or final decision at this time,” and added, “We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand. That’s very important to us. The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product and not on any others.”

He continued, “Fortunately, we have a deep bench and everybody is stepping up.” Berson’s words did not provide any certainty on whether Romo will continue in his role or not. He does seem to suggest that there is a real possibility of him being let go. There is some possibility of a contract termination due to a clause, though it depends on other factors.
Tony Romo’s contract situation with CBS
Romo signed a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS in 2020 and has roughly four years and $72 million remaining. According to The Athletic, that same contract has a morals clause, which can be used by networks to terminate the agreement for any improper incidents.
However, it also depends on how the clause is structured. If it is a broad interpretation, the network could use it to terminate the contract. But if it depends on getting a clear conviction or felony charge, then Romo could argue for it not to happen. As of now, he has not been convicted and the case is a civil one instead of a criminal one.
CBS is probably attempting to let the situation develop further and see if they can have the contract terminated and save the remaining money on it. Otherwise, they could simply buy him out. If they attempt to terminate it without a strong cause, the case could end up in arbitration and eventually a settlement. However, it is unclear what they are planning and whether the former quarterback can eventually return to his role.

It remains to be seen what else develops in this case for Tony Romo.
