A thrilling trophy match was a fitting start to the 2026/27 European season as Paris Saint-Germain defended their European title by winning the UEFA Super Cup, topping an impressive Aston Villa by a 2-1 score in Salzburg on Wednesday.

The traditional curtain-raiser was an exciting affair, as both sides gave it a run for their money. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and 17-year-old Brian Madjo cancelled each other out in the first half, but Desire Doue’s second-half winner gave PSG the trophy.

It made the Ligue 1 giants the first back-to-back UEFA Super Cup winners since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017, and only the third since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990.

4:34 p.m. — Aston Villa run a strong counter-attack and get into the penalty area down the left, and a cutback from the byline finds George Hemmings all by himself at the top of the 18-yard box! He comes crashing onto the loose ball with nobody around, but in comes Warren Zaire-Emery sliding across out of nowhere, heroically blocking the strike!

64th min: Chance, Aston Villa!

4:23 p.m. — Aston Villa very nearly strike back on the first play after the restart, but George Hemmings blasts the ball right at Matvey Safanov’s chest and the save is made!

Down the other end, PSG look to counter-attack through Achraf Hakimi, but he is tripped by Joao Gomes who is booked by the referee.

61st min: GOAL, PSG! 2-1

4:21 p.m. — Oh boy, Desire Doue has the ball in the back of the Aston Villa net as he gets way behind the Aston Villa defensive line on a feed from Ousmane Dembele and beats the goalkeeper, but the flag goes up for offside!

Everyone just stopped playing, assuming that he was miles off. Even Doue himself finished half-heartedly with no defender anywhere close. But on replay, Matty Cash on the far side didn’t move up on the offside trap with the rest of his back line, and on VAR review…IT’S A GOAL!!!!!!!

Oh dear, that’s an awful blunder from Cash, who keeps Doue onside and sees the goal given!

HALFTIME: PSG 1-1 Aston Villa

3:47 p.m. — A truly gripping first half featured attacking intent from both sides finishes level. Aston Villa started the better team for the opening five minutes, until PSG grew into the match and began to squeeze the Premier League side. They profited from this burst of dominance, as the sensational Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put the Champions League winners in front.

Villa, however, remained dangerous on the counter, and after missing a whole host of great chances on the break, they snatched back the ascendency in the final five to 10 minutes of the half. With PSG looking like they were already in the dressing room, Villa pummeled the French giants, and managed to go in front through powerful 17-year-old Brian Madjo.

What a wonderful 45 minutes of football! What will we have after the break?

3:46 p.m. — THERE IT IS FOR BRIAN MADJO! IT HAS BEEN COMING!

On no less than his fourth guilt-edged chance of the game, Brian Madjo buries the ball in the back of the net, as Aston Villa finally manage to equalise just before halftime! Again, it’s John McGinn who delivers a picture-perfect cross, and Madjo strongly holds off his defender and manages to stick his foot out at the delivery, poking it past Matvey Safanov at the far post around the back of his man.

3:43 p.m. — A BRILLIANT SAVE BY MATVEY SAFANOV KEEPS ASTON VILLA OUT! A scramble in the penalty area sees the ball come to Boubacar Kamara at the top-right corner of the six-yard box, and he tries to shoot through a collection of bodies standing in the way. He manages to thread it through all the defenders, but Safanov somehow sticks his hand out to parry it away! A wonderful reaction stop!

41st min: Chance, Aston Villa!

3:42 p.m. — OH NO, BRIAN MADJO MISSES AND EVEN BIGGER CHANCE! Aston Villa should be ahead, but he heads it over the crossbar from no more than three yards out! That’s a SITTER!

An Aston Villa corner delivery fails to beat the first man and is cleared by a PSG defender over the top, but it comes back to John McGinn at the top-right corner of the penalty area. He spins brilliantly to get rid of his mark, and floats another pinpoint cross to the head of Madjo right on the doorstep, but somehow he flubs it! There wasn’t even anyone covering him!

28th min: Chance, Aston Villa!

3:28 p.m. — BRIAN MADJO HEADS WIDE! Oh dear, that should be the equaliser!

The 17-year-old picks up the ball in transition splitting the centre-backs, and with his back to goal, he feeds John McGinn out wide right and sprints towards goal. The Aston Villa captain delivers a pinpoint cross back to Madjo, and he rises high like a salmon to meet the delivery, redirecting it towards the far post, but puts it just inches wide!

That really should be in the back of the net!

20th min: GOAL! PSG! 1-0

3:21 p.m. — KHVICHA KVARATSKHELIA STRIKES FIRST!!!!!! IT’S A BEAUTY!

Desire Doue almost put PSG in front with a deflected effort created by Kvaratskhelia, but his effort is saved exceptionally well by Marco Bizot in goal for Aston Villa.

That was only the first crack, though, and there was no saving the follow-up, as Kvara gets the ball inside the top corner of the penalty area and buries a beautiful curler past a diving Bizot who stood no chance!

3:14 p.m. — Boubacar Kamara takes aim from distance and just misses wide left! It’s been an even start for both sides, with the two clubs each providing their own version of attacking threat. Aston Villa get on the front foot and Kamara, who has taken over in midfield for the departed Youri Tielemans, fires just wide of the post past a diving Matvey Safanov!

2:30 p.m. — Today’s referee may be familiar to those who paid attention to the news surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup. UEFA offered this year’s job to Somali referee Omar Artan, who was denied a U.S. visa for entry to the country this past summer, and thus was unable to referee matches at the World Cup. It was a major news story, and foreshadowed the many issues that some nations faced while entering the United States during the tournament.

Artan was named 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year for his exceptional performances, and now becomes the first African to officiate a UEFA match.

2:15 p.m. — One man on the bench for PSG today is Bradley Barcola, despite significant transfer speculation about a potential exit from the Ligue 1 giants. Both Liverpool and Arsenal have reportedly been sniffing around, hoping to free the France international from his platoon with Desire Doue.

2 p.m. — Lineups are in! With PSG struggling to piece together their attacking lineup thanks to the World Cup absentees, new signing Maghnes Akliouche is slotted in at right wing, with Desire Doue deputising at central striker. Warren Zaire-Emery starts in midfield, while the back line is as expected for the reigning Champions League title holders.

For Aston Villa, Alejandro Garnacho is not in the squad due to concussion protocol, so 19-year-old Villa youth product George Hemmings gets the start. Joao Gomes makes his Aston Villa debut, while 17-year-old Brian Madjo gets the start up front in place of Tammy Abraham.

1:30 p.m. — Nobody has retained the UEFA Super Cup since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. Before them, the last was AC Milan in 1989 and 1990.

It’s a difficult task! Not only does it require a club to win back-to-back European titles, but also then win the Super Cup after a summer off.
