DeChambeau appeared to get into an argument with a rules official over a potential rules violation that would cost him a few strokes. That penalty would be the difference between DeChambeau being in the final group on Saturday and being in a cluster multiple shots behind Lucas Herbert.
Entering the tournament, DeChambeau had missed the cut at each of the first three majors this year, but he’s had his best performance of the season this week. Here’s a breakdown of the situation with DeChambeau.

After DeChambeau finished his stellar round at 7-under for the tournament, the golfer got into an argument with a rules official over a potential violation that allegedly occurred back on the fifth hole. DeChambeau hit his drive into the fescue on that hole, and he may have illegally improved his lie with his feet.
DeChambeau was found to have committed a violation, and he was docked two strokes on his scorecard.

DeChambeau was clearly furious and brought the rules officials back to the fifth hole to discuss the situation.

What did Bryson DeChambeau do?
On Dechambeau’s second shot on the fifth hole, the golfer had to navigate escaping the fescue on the right side. In the process, he may have trampled the grass near his lie, which could’ve illegally improved his lie in the process.

While DeChambeau’s follow through didn’t necessarily reach where he stepped, any attempt to improve a lie could be penalized.
Grant Moir, Chief Referee at The Open, told the media that DeChambeau was penalized for «inadvertandly improving the area of his intended swing.»

Bryson DeChambeau reaction to penalty
DeChambeau was fuming at the idea that he could be penalized two strokes for illegally improving his lie, to the point where he brought the rules officials to the fifth hole to discuss the situation.

Will Bryson DeChambeau withdraw from British Open
During his argument with the rules officials, DeChambeau appeared to say something like «I’m not playing tomorrow.»

On his way back from the fifth hole, though, he would not answer questions from reporters on if he would actually withdraw.
Bryson just walked by a huge throng of media on his way to scoring. Wasn’t sure if we’d see him again so I tossed out a question on everyone’s mind based on the lip-readers:
“Bryson are you playing tomorrow?”
He smiled a little, said nothing, kept walking.

After the ruling was given, his agent spoke with the media and didn’t confirm that DeChambeau would show up to play on Saturday. The agent said that DeChambeau felt he was «unfairly penalized» and painted as a cheater.
Bryson’s agent is saying Bryson is 100 percent serious that he is not sure he will play tomorrow. Plans to make the decision in the morning. “He’s a lot of things. He’s not a cheater.”

Bryson’s agent says Bryson has until his tee time tomorrow to decide if he’s playing or not. He’ll make the decision alone, not his team. “He’s a big boy. He’ll see how he feels. But he certainly feels he was unfairly penalized.”

DeChambeau, however, later posted on social media that he would continue playing in the tournament, saying that the situation «fires me up.»
