Norsk Tipping Predicts Record Betting Volumes as Norway Faces England

You may have seen videos of thousands of people rowing through the streets of Oslo, or at the very least caught TV footage of seas of red-clad Norwegian supporters performing the now-famous rowing celebration in stadiums across the United States. Tonight, the stage is set for what many are calling an epic showdown between Norway and England – or, as others prefer to put it, Kane vs. Haaland.

The Norwegian fans are not only busy rowing. Norsk Tipping set a new betting record when Norway faced Brazil, with 350,000 Norwegians logging in to place a wager. Now, the state-owned operator expects as many as 400,000 Norwegians to place a bet on tonight’s match.

At the same time, it is not only Norsk Tipping benefiting from the football fever. We have spoken with several operators serving Norwegian customers, and they too report record-breaking activity during the FIFA World Cup.

Earlier this week, we reported on how the Norwegian Gambling Authority had sent letters to individuals who had posted in Facebook groups with content that the regulator believes may violate Norway’s Gambling Act.

Earlier this week, Norwegian media also highlighted the story of two young Norwegian men who staked $28,000 on Norway to defeat Brazil and won almost $130,000. By comparison, Norsk Tipping has said that the highest payout among its own customers during the tournament has not exceeded NOK 300,000 (approximately €28,000).

Norsk Tipping also operates under significantly stricter payout and responsible gambling limits than operators licensed in Curaçao and other offshore jurisdictions. Although it has become increasingly difficult for these operators to target the Norwegian market, the challenge has by no means disappeared.

More Women Are Betting – and They Are Winning More Often Than Men

Norsk Tipping has reported unusually high betting activity during the tournament, and the figures reveal several interesting trends. Among them is a growing share of female bettors. Not only are more women placing bets, but they are also outperforming men when it comes to winning.

Norway Has Beaten the Odds – Leaving Norsk Tipping Facing World Cup Losses

Norway’s performances have exceeded bookmakers’ expectations, and with many Norwegians now betting with their hearts rather than their heads, Norsk Tipping is currently on course to post a loss on World Cup betting.

The operator has so far projected losses of NOK 32 million (approximately €3 million) as a result of Norway’s unexpected success.

Should Norway eliminate England tonight, those losses are expected to increase even further.
