Kevin Durant’s future in Houston faces fresh questions after his reported interest in joining a rising NBA star

Kevin Durant proved that he remains one of the NBA’s elite superstars during his first season with the Houston Rockets. Even so, uncertainty continues to surround his long-term future in Houston.

Several teams have reportedly reached out to the Rockets this offseason to inquire about Durant’s availability. League reports suggest the organization does not consider the future Hall of Famer an «untouchable» asset in potential trade discussions.

Meanwhile, NBA insider Brett Siegel reported that Durant is interested in the possibility of playing alongside Cade Cunningham.

“Durant has always had high praise from the young superstar guard early in his career and has been on the record multiple times calling him a “special talent.” …If Durant becomes available in any capacity or the Rockets look at possible trades involving him either now or in the near future, the Pistons are fully expected to be at the front of the line to bid on his services,” Siegel wrote.

Reportedly, many executives and league insiders remain skeptical that the Rockets intend to keep Durant through the remainder of his current contract. As a result, multiple teams are closely monitoring the situation in hopes of landing the NBA champion.

In this regard, the Pistons previously had an opportunity to acquire Durant. Reportedly, the Rockets explored a blockbuster three-team trade involving the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons. Under the proposed framework, Durant would have landed in Detroit, Alperen Sengun would have been sent to Boston, and Jaylen Brown would have joined Houston. However, the Rockets ultimately walked away from the deal because they were unwilling to part ways with Sengun.

At this stage, Houston is not actively shopping Durant across the league. Nevertheless, the franchise is listening to offers from interested teams. If a rival organization presents an overwhelming package, the Rockets could reconsider their direction and shift away from the Durant era.
